I'm in the market for some spangly new accounting software - the usual expense tracking, bill paying, auto backup etc.

I currently use Billings to track time and cost as freelancer. QuickBooks looks affordable and endorsed by Apple on their Business Solutions page...

What gets the thumbs up?

lee - probably just me but I cannot see any reference to a MAC version on there?
I mention it cos i'm a mac user, looking for the MAC version but my accountant, and Quickbooks supplier, tells me there's not a UK version for MAC?

br - sole trader
marsden/geoff - my mistake, it was advertised on Apple's site as PC software to be run under Bootcamp or Parallels. I was just looking at the .co.uk domain 🙁
Col - you mean it's server-based?

Do you really need specialist software, as we run our 2 person consulting business just using MS Office; with the accounting an Excel sheet(s) supplied by our Accountancy company.

Just a thought.

br - I need all the help I can get with bookkeeping. I'll see what my financial advisor recommends.

grum - I have XP on Bootcamp, but have suffered two .dll errors in the past few months so don't want to rely on it for business critical info!

It seems there is a gap in the market. The xero.com stuff looks OK, but I'd prefer integration with address book and ical etc if possible, also at £12 per month, it is stretching the boundary of what I would hope to pay.

There is a copy of quicken for mac here: http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/accounting-software/pro-mac-business-accounting-software.jsp

But it looks to be for the US market. I'm not sure it would have the regional tweaks for UK tax regimes etc.

Lee - there appears to be some reporting features in Billings (although I haven't explored them), maybe as br suggests a combination of Billings reports and Excel may do the trick.

What does your accountant say?

Oh how I hate to be right..
My accountant says he regularly communicates to the QB team that a UK / MAC version would be rather popular but they don't bite.....
Situation normal then - QB Simplestart at home on the steam driven PC ...

I've started using Quickbooks this financial year, having previously done it all in excel, in the hope it would make life easier. In fact it hasn't. the software is a complete pain in the arse and very un-intuitive to use. For each transaction you need to make multiple entries in different pages. Plus you just need to learn how to use a whole different software package, I'm still learning its infuriating ins and outs after >6 months. What it is good for is invoice generation, stock control and VAT reclaim. However on the whole I would say if you can continue to do it by excel then do so. I'd be inclined to take the ~£300 or so you'd spend on Quickbooks or other software and get a book-keeper in every 2-4 weeks for a couple of hours to help you out.

I run a 10 person company using excel and xero. Works fine for us and no install costs etc just monthly fee. Takes bank feeds, you can do expenses. Only thing missing is timesheeting really.

I've previously used Moneyworks from Cognito, for a company turning over £3million. It was ace. Dead stable, easy to work with, unlike Sage which replaced it.

Now I just use Freshbooks cos my life is a lot easier.

geoff - I use Billings to track time and cost as a freelancer, but I'm now needing something to actually bookkeep with. I don't think it can do this.

brant - Moneyworks Cashbook looks like what I'm after, reasonable price for the license too.
