Wow.

Wow.

Wow.

The underwater stuff was so stunning I assumed it was CGI.

So the last 15 minutes showed them filming it...

Watch it, favourite it on IPlayer and buy the DVD. Makes David Attenboroughs recent output look low rent.

I am jaded and was diving with rays on Monday but my gob is still smacked.

I switched off as it was patronising it was like an unfunny episode of Look Around You.

"Some sharks have heads shaped like hammers"

/click.

Missed out on some fantastic unseen shark stuff then Drac. It was amazing.

Next one should be good too.

David Attenborough, his constant anthropomorphising and slightly excessive interest in the reproductive behaviours of whatever animals he's covering have ruined many a well filmed nature documentary IMHO.

Stunning imagery, lots of frames that would make amazing stills.

And some inspiring dedication and hard work by the crews. 2600 hours underwater! With sharks....

I find the Mako shark chasing the camera very funny ... 😛

I am sad to see the blind Greenland Shark being blinded by bloody parasites ... 😡

Also feel sorry for the school of fish (fish ball) trying to escape the sharks and sea gulls.

Drac, I long ago gave up my expectations on narration- usually either sensationalist, patronising or both. And I am quite big on turning over or off as soon as something annoys me!

Some of the underwater footage was so stunning both in terms of image quality and numbers of and proximity to sharks I'd written it off as "walking with dinosaurs" level computer trickery. The last 15 minutes - "how we did it" stuff popped that and was worth a programme of it's own.

And I was reminded of the demotivational spoof poster "flying sharks, that's it we're f*cked".

Lots of it looked like it was CGI to me. Particularly the false colour blood in the seal sequence. Put me right off...

Used to go to Cape Town in the winter to go widsurfing/surfing/kiting.
Tried not to think about the 'big fish' too much.Averaged about one 'freakout' a season....couple of days to get over it and then carry on as normal. There was usually one 'incident' (usually on the other side of the cape) each year.

IT was amazing .. didn't learn anything? I did sharks rarely attack! 366 days filming over 2600 hours under water and not one shark attack .. even when the Great White was feeding! I mean it was THE best thing I have EVER watched. Can't wait for next week's episode!

I like sharks, I've read a lot about them. 🙂 Didn't know about the epaulette shark, though - that thing's ace! 🙂

Visually impressive but I thought it was unwatchable rubbish thanks to the dumbed-down script and ponderous narration. Plus it kept hopping around for no discernible reason. A waste of interesting footage IMO.

Agree with most of the above. Some good footage ruined by a Janet and John voice over and will they PLEASE stop adding the ridiculous sound effects like all the chomping noises in the black tip sequence. There was a great white documentary a few years ago that was filmed at Dyer Island (same place as the last lot) and they used a load of fixed cameras in the water and got equal footage to the recent doc.

You didn't know sharks rarely attack?

No wonder you didn't find it dumbed down.

Do you lot realise that there are more people (younger, older, less knowledgable, etc) than you watching TV? There are worse things on TV to moan about, put ITV on for a couple of hours from for example, then you'll have something worth whinging about!

Hmmm! My last post me come across as a bit insulting. It really wasn't meant to be.

DezB it really was very insulting, I appreciate people are different but when they go to narrative of explaining what they're are doing. Or as I mentioned explaining the hammerhead shark they are showing has a hammer shaped head that is way too low.

I didn't think it was. Watched it with my 12 year old and we were in awe. I'm honestly pretty fussy about narration too. I suppose I've always liked Paul McGann anyway.

That hammerhead comment will be on every week as it was the intro bit 😆

I think it was the bit in the wobbegong section when the script said 'it's behind you' that I turned off. With all the whooshing sound effects it really was a nature doco for the attention deficit generation; which is fine but I prefer more of a trad approach.

There was nothing dumbed down about it! Far better than I'm a celebrity, Big Brother and the other drivel on TV! If you didn't like it then you may leave this thread 🙂

Have to admit, I liked the fact they covered less obvious sharks.

I never knew that the Greenland Shark even existed, let alone there's an organism who's sole purpose in life is to eat the eyes of the Greenland Shark (and its cousin, the Pacific Sleeper Shark - thanks Wiki).

Genuinely fascinating. And as said above, the photography was breathtaking.

..and the other drivel on TV..

Yes, doesn't really make sense now, but the programmes on "now" referred to in my post above were Ninja Warrior UK and Britain's Got Talentless Freaks.
Now that's what I call dumbed down.
