I see they've got rid of the stupid "see more at", but now instead we're being invited to "share". Is there anybody here who is ever likely to used such functionality?

How about spending dev time making the broken stuff like nested quotes work instead?

Not in my browser (just checked in IE and now see what you mean). I don't see it in Firefox, but then I have loads of script blocking add-ons running, so I guess they're blocking it.

I suspect after a long time (up to 20 minutes for some people) this will become part of the furniture and the button won't even be noticed.

Nope they're blocked by one of the many add ones I use, probably NoScript.

Everything OK? Try not to get too cute with nested attributes. But why would you do that anyway? And it took less than one day, one thread, and 10 or so minutes, after either Patrick or I were made aware of the feature. No one seems to have filed a bug report. In fact, it appears, nothing was broken; it was a feature 🙂

Tom - the issue I was testing for there is that if you use the [qu?te] function without an extra "return" after the [/qu?te] then you get an extra line space, which is kind of the opposite of what you'd expect! The first block I did with no extra "return" ie:
[qu?te]A[/qu?te]
test
The second block I did with an extra "return" after each "/quote" ie:
[qu?te]A[/qu?te]

test
...which as you can see results in closer spacing!

Checking the HTML the first block has:
?blockquote>A?br>
?blockquote>B?br>
?blockquote>C?/blockquote>?br>
B?/blockquote>?br>
A?/blockquote>
- it's the ?br> tags which are causing the issue. If you remove them it looks a lot better. The second version doesn't have any ?br> tags, but a smattering of ?p> tags instead, which does at least look a bit better:
?p>?/p>?blockquote>A?p>?/p>
?p>?/p>?blockquote>B?p>?/p>
?p>?/p>?blockquote>C?/blockquote>?p>?/p>
?p>B?/p>?/blockquote>?p>?/p>
?p>A?/p>?/blockquote>?p>?/p>
The obvious solution is to simply convert [qu?te] tags straight to ?blockquote> ones without adding any ?br> or ?p> tags. I note that you can actually use ?blockquote> tags in a post, and doing so gives the correct result, ie:
?blockquote>A?/blockquote>
B
which results in:

A

B

as opposed to:
[qu?te]A[/qu?te]
B
which results in:

A

B

...so in theory it is actually possible to fix this client side (as I plan to do with the STW chrome extension, to which I'm also adding functionality to work automatically with nested quotes now that works properly). Though if it only took 10 minutes to fix nested quotes, this one should take about 1 minute (and it will improve the layout of posts from people like Junkyard who use lots of quotes but don't use the extension)!

Not trying to be at all cute, just get basic functionality working. I'm pleased to see that stuff like this is being fixed, so not having a go at all, but it's far from the first time I've mentioned it as an issue (I'm well aware it's not something new):
http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/new-forum-user-feedback/page/3#post-227520
How do I go about filing a bug report for any other "features" I find? 😉

p.s. don't try copying and pasting any of the visible tags in this post - for obvious reasons I've fixed them so that they don't work.

...too late to edit I see that using ?blockquote> tags in your post still results in ?p> tags being added, so still wider spaced than it could be.

Yes, a quote is simply a blockquote. TBH I see the spacing choices as a client issue and a feature of the site.

BTW your request for more refined sorting on histories is filed under bug #14 or thereabouts 😉

I'm sort of wondering how often I'd use nested quotes; probably less often than I'd use the 'share' function.
While I do put stuff up on Fb, for example, I really can't think of any circumstances where I'd want to post anything from here on there.
Not that I have anything to be ashamed of, you understand... 😉
TBH I see the spacing choices as a client issue and a feature of the site.

A feature or a "feature"? Are you suggesting the way it works at the moment - adding spacing the user hasn't asked for - is correct? In my post above I used [c?de] tags which get translated straight to <c?de> tags without anything else being added and that seems to format fine - why can't the same work with [qu?te] being translated to ?blockquote> and nothing else being added (I've tried deleting the ?br> tags and it looks fine)? Apologies for this Junkyard as it's not your fault, but here's a good example of what goes wrong with post formatting at the moment: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/refusal-to-take-part-in-religious-school-trip-racial-descrimination/page/3#post-5540027 - I do have to wonder whether some of the abuse Junkyard cops is because of this issue.

BTW your request for more refined sorting on histories is filed under bug #14 or thereabouts

I'm surprised it's that high a priority!
I'm sort of wondering how often I'd use nested quotes;

I can't say it's something I use (or would use) all the time, but it's really handy occasionally when you need to give context for what you're quoting and the previous situation was a pain. So thanks again for fixing it.

I take your point. I'll make a bug report.
I see a lot of people also use \r\n
reply to get their narrow gap.

How do they do that? (I have to admit I've not searched through loads of threads, but hadn't spotted that in the HTML). As you might have noticed I tried, but had no success, so I presume there's some key sequence you reckon.

BTW were you editing your post in response to me editing mine?

Yup a few times.

The itsme post replying to JC thread for one, I got around 70+ retweets for that and it brought it very much to the attention of other media outlets by doing so.

Nah. Just turned them off. I am sure some must use them, otherwise why else would the powers that be code them in.
