We will be in touch
Got given a 2&1/4 petrol '82 Series III Landy a month ago which has been handy as we have a track 0.9 miles long to the house. It's started on the button and run fine and been brilliant for getting up and down the track in the snow, leaving cars parked at the end.
Got home late last night, parked car and jumped in the Landy. It fired up fine and ran for a little while I turned it round but then cut out. Wouldn't restart but after a few minutes did so but then cut out again. Did this a few times and then refused to run more than a couple of seconds.
Suspected no fuel - gauge is broken - so trudged back to the house (in a near blizzard) and got some. Put it in but still the same: turned over, fired, ran a few seconds, died. Next time you turned it it wouldn't fire at all. Waite a few mins then it would do the same.
Checked the distributor/plugs. Fine with a strong spark. Plugs not sooty/oily but good condition and dry. Took air filter hose off and no change either. Suspected fuelling- could see fuel in the filter and it's present in the intake pipe but didn't investigate further due to the snow and it being past midnight so abandoned it and hiked back to the house.
What's my first point of investigation this morning? Will there be some kind of airlock if it's run out of fuel? Other ideas?
well, you need fuel, air and a spark and seem to have all 3.
Can I suggest that you ask the same question here.
You'll have plenty of people who can give detailed help.
Yeah good point. It's just I haven't registered on any Landy forums yet and STW normally provides answers on all topics! 😆
I'm registering now.
I can't remember if it's an electrical or mechanical fuel pump on the landy - if electrical, try giving it a whack with something hard. Sometimes they get stuck. If mechanical, would suggest fuel filter - my money's on fuel delivery issue of some form.
Yeah had a good hunt around.
Fuel filter bowl on the (mechanical) fuel pump looks the first port of call, followed by inline fuel filter and cleaning the carb.
maybe its why the previous owner gave it away...

You don't understand Land Rovers - *every* bit of them is replaceable, usually pretty cheaply.
Talking of which, anyone in The Hague want to hold my hand as I do my first wheel bearing replacement ?
Nah he gave it away due to circumstances and he knew I needed it more than he did.
Well opened the carb and sprayed in cleaner. Took off and cleaned fuel filter and the bowl on the fuel pump. Cranked the lever on the fuel pump several times - Hey Presto! Started up first time. Running fine now - which is just as well coz the hike up the drive was not looking too appealing.
Sorry Cranberry - not too local for me. I'm sure there are plenty of crazy Dutch Land Rover bores who'll help you out though.
Must say, after a morning of surfing Landy sites I've already learned a lot of stuff and I like how everything seems to be fixable. 🙂
Had to jump start our mates 110 TD5 earlier with ours. Batteries on theirs are knackered.
The series 3 were prone to icing carb problems, some had modified air intakes to breath air from over the exhaust manifold. Check the fuel filter and tank for water. Does it hunt (run rich) before it stalls ?
If it's got SU carb, or the others that I can't remember the name of, check the oil level in the dashpots. No oil can affect running quite significantly.
