iPhone records as .mov right? Can an HTC Desire view this or does it need to be converted to .mp4?

Native video formats are listed here,

.mov isn't supported natively, however there's nothing to stop apps from supporting it. I believe Rockplayer is well regarded and supports Quicktime. There's probably others.
