what happens, i have to send a form to the Student Loans company asking for deferal for another year and to be honest fail to see why if i don't earn enough to pay back i should have to cough up for proving the fact?

The fact that my earnings are now zero makes me even more unimpressed.

So if i post this letter with no stamp what happens?

It gets binned by Royal Mail. Student Loans send me a running total every year, but as a contractor with a £100k training loan to pay off I ask them to defer it.

I reckon you'll die, but try it anyway. I'm sure the student loans company get it all the time from students who 'can't afford' a stamp but can still go out and get pissed every night. Carry on, you'll go far.

not a student, just someone who has been made redundant looking for cutting pointless expenditure, like stamps so i can prove i am broke.

just proves you're not worth employing IMO

assuming it's important to have a deferral aren't you just shooting yourself in the foot to spite your face

i object to the whole system of student loans and am ****ed off that i have to pay in the first place, which is different argument but related.

On one occasion they debited my account in-spite of meeting the application date and offering evidence of earnings, they just chose to ignore and debt my account, sending me a rejection letter, i then had to reapply at my cost, to prove their screw up.

If i don't have to pay and waste my time, time that can be used far more constructively then i will. Isn't business about screwing others for your own gain?

As far as I know prospective employers don't approach the student loans company to see if your mail is always stamped. I could be wrong though.

So you failed to cancel the direct debit then?

Ay, just cancel the direct debit ain't that hard. If your below the threshold £15k then your employer or dole office can do all the paper work.

i have now cancelled the direct debit, but if you read the agreement you sign you are obliged to have a valid direct debit, if you don't then you are in breach of contract etc.

I am not on the 15k scheme. but the older if you don't earn 2,200 a month then pay nothing scheme.

So i take it that no one actually knows what the RM policy is then? i know that in the past i have recieved unpaid and underpaid letters, and then had to pay the difference plus a RM handling charge.

My dealings with the SLC in the past mean i have no problem making the SLC pay for my post.

Don't worry, they'll probably add it to your balance.

OK if you send a letter with no stamp, what will happen is RMs system will filter it out, send it to the delivery address's nearest RM office, who will then send out a card telling the recipiant that there's a unpaid item being held.
They will be expected to pick up the cost, plus a one pound surcharge.
Most organisations just ignore these requests and the mail is sometimes returned to sender, sometimes destroyed.

The time to object to the idea of a student loan was before taking one out, not after. I hate the c***s, mind. TBH if you're sending anything to the student loans forget about a stamp, you want to send it recorded because as far as I can tell if you send them anything without proof of postage they just bin it then claim nonreceipt and charge you £30.

Send it with the student loans company as the return address.

Slightly O-T, but when i had a decently waged job well over the repayment threshold (i'm a broke student again now), the SLC only took £75 a month off me anyway. It barely covered the interest, let alone reduced the size of the loan.

OT, but still student loans.

Heard an advert the other day about its important that you apply for your loan now, to ensure it turns up in Sep/Oct.

FFS, grant applications in my day didn't have to be in so early - have we made no progress in the 20 odd years and countless systems/suppliers?

Makes my blood boil what a ****-up the various politicians/public sector (and their suppliers) have made to this country!

not wishing to rock the boat but...i am a student and im rather grateful to the student loans company. if it weren't for them i wouldnt be here!

however, so far i have not had any issues which i havent been able to sort out with a couple phone calls.

OP: send it recorded! seriously if you don't you can never proove they got it.

P.s. not all students just go out every night and get pissed!
...some waste money on bikes...lol (only kidding i have a job here and at home)

To answer your question. RM will surcharge it, probably by about a £1 + the cost of a stamp. They will then put a card through the door of the recipient asking for the money. If they don't pay it will be returned to you (if your address is on the outside of the envelope or it will go to belfast to be binned off.

Hope this helps.

BB

He’s not a student of English, otherwise he’d know to capitalise ‘I’, and spell received correctly. It’s i before e, except after c. Even I know that.

Bianchi, He may find he is surcharged again for the return.
Why should we go to the effort and expense of returning something that never had paid postage at any point.
We're not some kind of public service, you know 😉

We get a few unstamped letters - most times we get carded but sometimes they just deliver it even though they've clearly identified it as unpaid or under paid

Naaaa, just the Media hyping up the problem, I invariably applied late/forgot/lost in post so regularly applied August/September, always had the money in my account and tuition fees paid before the first lecture (usually 3rd or 4th Monday in September).

When are you talking about though? The SLC really f-ed it up for the 2009/10 academic year, thousands of students had to wait months for their loans.

A Swedish friend found a solution to his student loan problems. He left the country.
