We have had a preliminary valuation of £100-£150 on the cabinet and £80-£120 on the desk from an auction house but by the time they have taken their cut and compulsory insurance we are losing 20% of that.
I thought of eBay but not sure how that works or if it is the best place to sell. I assume I can stick a reserve on the items. Do the buyers see the reserve? How much do I lose paying commission to eBay and PayPal?
I can deliver to anyone near Southampton, Anyone want them?
Anyone think of a better way to sell?
Why not try Gumtree?
ebay is difficult without delivery on offer. Most people just cant heft big furniture around.
You may find a local house contents auctioneers. Look for a "general sales" auction in your local rag. We have one every fortnight in Malvern a converted church. The trade go there and get stock so its quite likely that whilst it wont be a full price, it wont get lost in the junk if it's any good.
Alternatively take some photos and show them to some local s/h/antique furniture shops. They may make you an offer if they think they have a buyer, they may even put it in their shop and sell on commission. If I have things I dont really need I often haggle for shop credit to swap for something I do want.
I did a house clearance a few months ago. The first thing I did was to get a local 2nd hand / antique dealer to take a look. First you've got to decide if you trust him.
He took 2 items but advised me to ebay the rest - he was good enough to give me the key words I needed to put in the descriptions & title (although I later found thet putting "Ercol style" gets your listing pulled) and said to advertise them "buyer collect".
Lots of photos and as much description as poss will usually guarantee a fair price.
Putting a reserve on isn't a problem - neither is setting a starting price on an auction, but best to be brave and wing it with no reserve (and get your mate to bid at the last minute if you think it's going for 50p).
Well they are on Gumtree now until the 25th when I truck them off to the auction house.
If anyone on here wants them we can cut a deal I am sure
