Is there a way of looking at a wireless network password if you're hard-wire connected?
Staying with friends and they've forgotten their password. We can connect with a netwrok cable (by sitting in their lounge), but not wireless from another room.
Yep. It is usually in plain text if you can log into their touer admin page.
Try going to http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.2.1 from the hard-wired PC.
It's usually one of those. You'll need the username (usually admin) and the router password (not the same as the wireless one)
forgotten the wireless password, or the router admin password, or both?
Not if the router follows security best practice... Do you know the admin password for it? If so you could just reset the wireless password otherwise (assuming they didn't leave it at the default password in which case you'd need to google for it) you'll probably have to do a factory reset on the router and start again with the config (so make sure you know what the settings should be first)
Yes, point your browser to the ip address of the router (type in "IPCONFIG" in the command prompt and you will see the "default gateway" address which will be something like "192.168.245.1"
on your browser http://192.168.254.1 (or whatever the default gateway value is)
you might need a username and password (a quick google will give you the default for the router model)
Default key? Is it not written on a label underneath the router?
forgotten the wireless password.
Their sons are both connected but can't rememeber the password they used "once a long time ago" to initially connect.
I'll try that Graham. Cheers
My dad's friend has a virgin netgear router, where the password is asterisked out. Very annoying, but his tenants obviously know it, as they all use it, have asked him a couple of time to ask them...
Anyone know of a solution to this?
(other than reseting all the settings? As he gets all uptight about annoying his tenants)
EDIT: Though the login is defult, the wireless setting have definitely been changed
you could just hard reset the router (normally holding in the reset button for 10 secs or something) and then it will default to factory settings and you can set a new password.
If you've got a PC already connected to the wireless network, download and run this to extract the password from the Windows password store:

My dad's friend has a virgin netgear router, where the password is asterisked out.
You could try ShowPassword which reveals what is in asterisked boxes.

Or try the Show My Password add on for Firefox

Cheers Graham, I just grabbed Nucleus Kernel Password Unmask to try to do the same thing, but will take both to try next time I'm there.
(I only think about it when I'm there, hense the thread hi-jack, that and I'm grabbing a laptop for my dad to use round there, so need the password for him...)
