So, I went for a posh job interview last week and have now been informed that they are delighted to invite me for a second interview.

Any HR types (or anyone else) for that matter care to explain this to me ? The first interview lasted an hour and was a pretty thorough grilling concerning work based scenarios. I'm really not sure why they need to see me again ?

Will it be a competitive interview or are they just convincing themselves that I'm the guy ?

They may be running quite a few filtering stages or just want to be sure. Seems fairly standard to me

To get my current job (although not started yet) I did a skills test, then a phone interview, then a total of 4, hour(ish) long on site interviews.

The other company I interviewed at a while back had several rounds. Basically an on-site screener (which was two interviews) and then a day at an assessment centre and another set of interviews. (Didn't like the company though so rejected them)

Traditionally, the second interview is when you do your elephant impression.

Could be a more thorough grilling, or it could be a noddy HR interview.

You need to know, so you can prepare. Might be best to ask them...

If they ask you what your weaknesses are, tell them you're a workaholic.

Normally it will be someone else doing the interview, so they get a different persons opinion of you.

If it's HR, make sure you brush up on the company and what they do....that seems to something they pay attention to....oh and that you aren't some mad axe murderer type.

Is it via an agent or directly, might be an idea just to ask a couple of questions so you are prepared for the rough format of the interview.

Have you discussed money, it might be where they get a few people who they think are ideal for the job and see which one has similar expectations with the company with regard to dosh.

Generally, back in my white collar days, the second interview was a confirmation thing...with a HR bod sitting in. Y'know...I often got the feeling that because it was always one guy interviewing for the first, that he had to get someone else to check that he'd found someone so awesome. 🙂

Anyway, whatever it is, best of luck to you tm.

On the (couple of) jobs I've gone for, the 2nd interview has usually been with the original interviewer and the MD.

tell them to piss off. explain you only went to the original interview to see if there were any decent women knocking about or enough pubs near by. remember they need you, you dont need them.

I just had a 2nd interview last night - well it consisted of 2 interviews followed by a beers/buffet where we were judged on social skills it seems. The interviews weren't as tough as the 1st interview but they were still around the job and skills for that and not HR related.

What tenfoot said. Ive got one lined up for later this week, first one is with the prospective line manager and then the second will be with his manager as well. First one technical, what you can do, what you can bring, second generally more about personality, will yo fit in, will people like you kind of thing.

Round 2 is the swimsuit round

extra small speedos at the ready.

Could be a number of things. 1st interview is sometimes technical, 2nd is sometimes person fit. Sometimes it's for a senior manager to rubber stamp the hire, sometimes it's to try and separate 2 or more close candidates. The best option is definitely to ask them what format it will take - if they're any use at all they'll be used to the question and happy to answer.

33 is my record!

No surprise to have 2-3. As they progress it becomes less can this guy do the job and more do I want to sit and look at his ugly mug all day etc. Oh and can someone else please have a look just in case I am hiring a muppet - risk sharing!!!

Don't let your guard down at any point and good luck!!!

As above really - expect it to be similar to the first but to a different person. Quite often HR and others do the first round which is a screening to narrow it down to top 2 / 3 or 4 and then they bring in the higher paid help (in theory) to make the final decision.

Nothing unusual - I had 3 interviews for my current job and at least 2 is the norm for what I do.

A solid hour with a manager type person to start with and from there they tend to draw up a shortlist.

Then round 2 with those they select to go forwards usually with the manager type plus some technical type to determine who gets the nod...

I had a telephone interview last week, first interview today was to find out who i was. I may have a second interview soon the purpose of which is to decide whether i have the technical skills needed, The way it was put was the person matters more than the skills (within reason). Then there would be a final interview in the pub to see if the candidate gels with the rest of the team!

I'm recruiting at the moment.

2 of my team managed the first round. Their 'appointable' people are put through to the second round, with one of the team, a Director and me.

Focus of the first round was 'do they have the skills to do the job?'

Focus of the second round is 'will they fit into this business?'

Oh, and do be careful on hobbies and interestes - one candidate went on and on about his running abilities. A simple Powerof10 search revealed him to be somewhat slower than his cv's race times. What a pointless thing to lie about.
