Are compression shorts actually any good? or are they just another quick way of parting a fool and my money?
Normal base layer undershorts stop chaffing but are compression shorts actually worth the extra cash and do they do what they claim to do?
I was thinking that they might be useful as I'm trying to run 3 times a week and slowly build up the distance too. So 2x 30-40mins runs midweek then a longer run on the weekends building up to half-marathon eventually. Any thoughts?
How many pro runners use them?

I used to get sore hamstrings after football, but wearing compression shorts (while playing) I don't get them so much. Could be the compression shorts, could be coincidence.
(I've seen plenty of pro runners wearing compression [i]socks[/i]..and nearly every rugby player wears the shorts, but they prob get paid to do so)
Compression devices are for punters
I reckon they'd be good for footy in the winter.
They might be useful for running as I'm a fat less-than-amateur who needs all the help he can get
FWIW in the low-key, massively unsponsored world of fell running very few of the contenders wear compression shorts or socks.
I got some cheap in a sale recently as my other shorts are a tad worn, decent brand (Asics) but they're not great. These are the kind with a compression liner under a normal running short, so not your longer thigh length spandex, that could play a part.
I find the compression part just rides up my somewhat chunky thighs and gathers in the crack of my arse, making them a bit uncomfortable. They're warm too so I wouldn't recommend for the summer.
Edit to add: They do feel tight around my bottom though which fools me into thinking it's smaller than it probably is.
The biggest advantage I find that compression shorts give me when undertaking dynamic exercising (circuit training, running) is it stops all jingle-jangling in the downstairs department.

More for endurance stuff, distances over 1/2 mara really, so not sure they would be that good for the OP.
To be fair OP.... just get out there!! One of the great joys of running is all you have to do is sling on your trainers open the door and you are away... doing what you love/will learn to love.
I have some Nike and Ronhill 2-1s. Same price as usual shorts and keep your julies in check.
Mainly just Lycra liners inside, so not full compression.

I always have a chuckle when I see people commuting in Skins compression shorts, tights, or even worse those silly calf things.
Compression works. Most effectively either for longer endurance stuff, or as a recovery tool. I use Skins recovery tights on ski trips and they're ace.
Also, for compression to work to the most effective level, you really need to have as much muscle "compressed" as possible, apparently.
So the summary is they'll keep "big Steve and the Twins" in check on any run, reduced chaffage and help with endurance but only on long runs (10miles +) and they can help with recovery after a run.
Plus they might convince me that I've got a small bum and they sometimes have a placebo effect especially after you've forked out for them

I find they help with keeping everything in place and chaffing problems, but also they do help a bit with recovery on longer runs ie 6 mile +
On short runs they dont do that much, but if the intensity is very high they do help the blood get going a bit more than normal.
Compression socks though id say are a lot better as they do improve blood flow and stop cramps in the calfs, so are worthwhile getting if you doing high intensity stuff.
I use them on ultra marathons, stage races etc. I feel they aid recovery a bit, they'll not shave 20% off of your times or make you a pro, some people will say you look silly. They might make you ache a bit less enabling a better run the following day or let you go a bit! further
I am not a pro, maybe there's some placebo effect. I like mine (skins) you might like them too (not my ones though 🙄 ) you might not.
if you don't mind spending a few extra £ give a pair a whirl.
