Don't you mean the name of your wi-fi network?

I used to work at a place where the machine naming convention was The Simpsons. Domain was Springfield, Domain Controller was Burns, etc.

When we got a new core router, I named it Wiggum, on the grounds that it directed traffic.

While we're on it.
Can I suggest that anyone who thinks it's a good idea to name their wireless network after their own name, change it to something a bit more anonymous?

I see it all the time and it's a terrible idea. For a start anyone who's unimaginative enough to name their wireless after their name is also likely to be unimaginative with their password so they'll go to the top of the list for attacking.

machine naming convention was The Simpsons

Yeah, very common one that. Lord of the rings and star trek are other ones that pop up regularly.

My personal machines are all based on bikes I've owned/own.

Mine is "updown" bit of a joke in this house after Higgo's kids named a track pump "updown".
Even the phones are "up" & "down" one is upstairs & one is downstairs 😉

In the last tenement we lived in there was one called 'kidporn'

I can only think it was a student upstairs who thought it would eliminate the possibility of ANYONE using his/her wifi.

I've done this before on here but the one down the end of our road is named **** OFF STUDENTS.

But obviously without the asterisks.

You need to lose the 'd' at the end.

A female friend of mine who is - as we call her - 'big in the boob' - had hers changed to 'Boobhilde' for a couple of years when she wasn't looking.

She doesn't understand those computer things and was extremely pleased when she moved to BT and they sent her a new router with generated alphanumeric name.

There is one near work that I pick up sometimes called 'Help-Stuck in Router'

Probably a Tron reference, always brings a smile.

If you are particularly geeky and want to have a bit of fun with the folk trying nick your wifi for free then this little tutorial may be of interest:
