RIP my old pal Pope Benedict. I was lucky enough to meet Benny at a roller disco in Arbroath in 1964. He was wearing a pair of denim shorts that caused a rubbernecking divorcee to banjo herself against a pillar and I kept a keen eye on his career ever since.

Just checked my cupboard of f##ks and I have literally none to give.
Always sad when a fellow human passes away but there is so much wrong and outdated about the institution he represented that I find it hard to feel anything more (and perhaps even less) because of who he was.
I understand that religion gives some people solace, but the whole fire and brimstone, child abuse and dogmatic approach to modern issues means that on balance in my eyes he probably did more harm than good. I don’t need the likes of him or his religion to tell me right from wrong, good from bad or how to live a good life.
Bit early in the new year for a rant, and apologies if I have caused offence to anybody but something that really boils my p##s.
There is a tremendous Bob Servant book that deals with him wasteing the time of internet scammers.
Its very funny if anyone sees it.

My (non religious) daughter is delighted that he has passed away while her Catholic school is on holiday. She's hoping any extra masses will be done with before she goes back on 9th

Never met the fellow but I once dreamed of him several months back last year (2022) where he was reading a large thick old book in his study. I went over to say "hi" he took a glance at me over his shoulder and continued on reading, While I looked out from his room into the square. Nice scenery.
Many blame the religion but for what I know religion/belief/teaching is just that. Guess what it is the people who interpret it then use it as a way to will their power of influence that is the problem.
I liked his breakfasts
Was he the one that packed it in coz he couldn't handle the amount of priests who had abused little boys and did nothing? That one, the representative of God on earth, that pope?
If there is a god* then Benedict is being treated to the same abuse he covered up for decades.

My father (a religious man) met him back in 2010, as he worked at the Birmingham Oratory, as place full of self serving idiots (my dad's description). During my fathers family funeral back in Ireland a few years later, while he was laid out the priest came and gave us his sympathies, glanced at the photos of him and his eye bulged at seeing his photo of him shaking the popes hand. During the funeral the same said priest first line of his memorial (think Rev Ian Paisley shoutiness) "WHO OF YOU can say you met and shook the popes hand?". It brought a smile to our faces, during a sad time

It is and that's quite a kicking the church got. At least Anne Widdicombe was well prepared but Stephen Fry was fabulous and well thought out. I have no idea why that Archbishop was there
