Sad news from Finland, not the most stable human being and certainly not excusing his behaviour but the mas was exceptional at his sport.

Oh dear, yes I remember him from his jumping days but I didn't know about his, erm, "issues". Just read this on Wikipedia and couldn't resist a chuckle:
"Nykänen met millionaire sausage heiress Mervi Tapola in 1999".

At the end of the 1990s, due to serious financial problems, Nykänen worked as a stripper in a Järvenpää restaurant.

On 24 August 2004, Matti Nykänen was arrested on suspicion of attempted manslaughter of a family friend after losing a finger pulling competition[13] in Tottijärvi, Nokia.

As one does...

Brilliant ski jumper, let down by unstable temperament. Maybe the two are connected.

Weird wording. Was his wife a millionaire who inherited a sausage? Must have been quite a distinctive one.

She is daughter of food company founder, the company specializes on sausages. But I’d give some slack to her, for she was stabbed and mugged twice by this former skijumping hero who was then jailed twice for his actions. And Nykänen married maybe twice after their divorce.

He sounds mental, even by Finnish standards.
