I was just about to start up a "Soulful Saturday" thread (to follow on from the funky friday one) but I am not so enthusiastic now - terrible news. They were discussing him on Gilles Petersons show this week wrt making the last album and the remix album.

A real shame to hear this, been a fan for years, but never actually got to see him live.

For those who don't know his music, give it a try. He was a brilliant man.

the "Black Bob Dylan" ?

No, Gil Scott Heron. I think he was talented enough in his own right to be considered on his own merit, rather than being a 'black version' of anyone else....

RIP.

I'd never heard of him, then stumbled into a small tent at the stockton (!) music festival in about 1994 he was playing and I was blown away. I was about 20 and his music has been played regularly in my house since then. sad day.

I have just found out and I must say I am gutted! He was an absolute god. He was a very intelligent, inspirational artist who inspired a whole generation of black people to take a stand against racism, poverty, drug abuse etc. Unfortunately some of his demons got the better of him. But he seemed to be getting his act together last year with the release of a great new album. I had the pleasure of seeing him in the 90's(Essential Music Festival Hackney Marshes?) Just him and a piano in a small marquee. Brilliant! RIP

100%

Gill Scott Heron was the first musical artist that I listened to that spoke of serious issues. A tight combination of poetry, political satire, social conscience and fantastically involving and entertaining music meant that he was able to tell his stories to segments of society that might not otherwise have listened.

Like TooTall said if you're reading this and thinking "who?" do yourself a favour and buy 'Winter In America' or 'Pieces of a Man' and enjoy being schooled.

A life well lived. RIP.

Very sad news, it appears that I'm at that age where all my hero's are passing on.

I saw him at the Jazz Cafe in the 90's and he was the best live performer I have ever seen. Along with Terry Callier he was one of the destinctive voices of American Black Politcal music. At least he saw his dream of a black president of the USA and a free South Africa.

A flawed man but a hero, music will not be the same.
