wife is going to spend time in Roehampton on thursday and suggested i ride in richmond park for a couple of hours while she does this?? anyone ridden there? is it worth the effort? and where do you park?
thanks for the help.
You can park in the park during opening hours but otherwise most people seem to park in one of the surrounding roads and hop over the gate.
Its not great but its better than nowt. Watch out for broody stags though depending on when you go, they can be quite scary and apparently the handlebars on a bike look to them like antlers or something so they can get aggressive near bikes.
Plenty of parking in Richmond Park (Pay & Display), 6 mile road loop and various bits of off-road, some more cheeky than others. Personally I wouldn't bother with the "MTBing" round there as, unless you really know the area, you'll probably get into bother with the wardens for straying off the dull gravel track that passes for off-road.
Road bike there is great though, 4 or 5 laps of the park and you'll really know about it! I prefer clockwise but either way works. 🙂 Just watch yourself on the descents, sometimes the rangers are out with speed guns pulling over cyclists for exceeding the 30mph limit (that's not a joke).
sounds like i need to take the darksider rather thant the 5?? thanks
Oh and if you're on a road bike take it easy at the junction near the Robin Hood gate. Unless they have resurfaced it recently its like glass and quite a few roadies have picked up a road rash memento to take home at that point.
Speed limit is only 20 mph so very easily broken
Michael Hutchinson (the king of time trials) used to train there, though I seem to remember he moved out of London a short while back. I bet he did more than the speed limit 😀
The speed limit is enforceable for cyclists as its a Royal Park not Highway.
i have just done 3 laps this lunchtime the surface is fine, there are some bumpy bits but no big potholes to worry about.
the coffee is rubbish and the food way overpriced in the cafe's.
the standard of driving there is piss-poor. people seem to think they are are in some kind of safari park so stop and slow down to look at the deer when the bylaws forbid stopping/parking on the carriageway.
it's better than riding on stop-start london streets though.
