Will be in Cambridge on Saturday and looking for some recommendations for dinner.
Preferably in the city centre, happy to eat pretty much anything, ideally not full of drunken students, price not too much of an issue, would like to avoid the usual chains if possible.
So, any ideas?
Cheers.

it's not in the city but the Hole in the Wall in Little Wilbraham is absolutely excellent. The chef came 2nd on Masterchef in 2010 and it shows. Not as easy as a place in the city centre but totally worth the drive.

The Hole in the Wall is excellent but I doubt if you'll get a booking for this weekend but certainly worth a try but it is a drive. There isn't that much that's decent in Cambridge itself TBH. There's a Jamie's which is okay. I only eat in Cambridge if I'm going to the cinema and normally end up at a Pizza Express which won't suit your brief. There's a fantastic indian at the old Shelford railway station but again it's a 10 minute drive from the centre. Actually there's a decent indian heading up to towards Cambridge station; The Safron I think (a quick Goggle http://www.saffron-brasserie.co.uk/) that's five minute walk from the centre. You'll need to book though. Sadly Cambridge is governed by the students eating habits.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

On good authority from somebody more familiar with Cambridge dinning:

The Chop House
Or
D'Arry's Hotel du Vin

A Google search will give the detail.

Ate here a couple of months ago:

OK, it's a chain, but it was really good, and excellent value for money.

Nice korean place down mill road, limited menu but very good.
Rainbow cafe opposite kings might be shut in the evening
The varsity restaurant

Have a google loads of places. Also your a car or bus ride away from the current pub of the year in hemingford.

Trip Advisor has a list with ranking for pretty much all of them. Seems fair to me.

My favourite is The Oak Bistro but you'll need to book and it'll probably be full on Saturday by now. Hotel du Vin is very good as is Loch Fyne.

We have a lot of work outings to Las Iguanas, in fact I'm there tomorrow night - nice enough venue, nothing special mind, but decent enough.

Backstreet bistro on mill road is nice.
I am another big fan of the hole in the wall wilbraham...easy cycling distance from me, love it.

Oh sorry it's not ON mill road it's near mill road. Efes (Turkish) is quite nice too and a bit more central

Are you going on a date with another STW'er?

Try the other Chop House round the back of St Johns? It tends to be a little quieter...

I was a massive fan of Efes on King St. when I live round the corner (Not the same as King's Parade) just up the road from the Oak Bistro... Superb Turkish food and well worth it...

Alimentum as well. It has a Michelin star now though so probably booked out! Also restaurant 22 (but probably also booked out)

Restaurant 22 is very good but yes, you might struggle to book it at this late stage.

The Vaults is good too for Tapas and cocktails.

Shame the chop house is booked as the food there is really good.

Alimentium is pricey, but the food is very well made and prepared. South side of the city too.

If all else fails, then the Italian food at the Maypole is worth eating and the beer selection is excellent, it may well have a few drunken students in on a Saturday night though.

Largely there are probably more places to eat and drink in town than anything else.

Back Street Bistro, should get a booking for the WE, nice place and more importantly you can see a rather large workshop taking shape from just outside the restaurant (ok, you'd need to stand on a car, or jump up a bit).

Taken the inlaws to http://www.theploughfenditton.co.uk/ was very nice.

Couldn't disagree more with that! Yes, all the chains are present and correct, but there are plenty of good independents.

Of the places mentioned above, I'd second D'Arry's, the Chop Houses (there are two of them, one in the centre and one just to the north), Backstreet Bistro, Restaurant 22 and the Galleria. Midsummer House has great reports from friends who've been, but it's a bit out of my price range so can't confirm. You're also spoiled for good pubs.

Last time I went to Brown's it was pretty good. Was years ago though...

Midsummer house is amazing but so expensive. We spent over 200 quid for two and I was pregnant so drank only one tiny glass of wine. Also I can't recommend snails with a pipette of sauce to inject into your mouth when 10 weeks pregnant - made me feel a bit pukey to be honest...

Browns is good but it is a chain I think which op says they don't want.

Also I agree with mr greedy (appropriate name) I feel hungry now.
