First time its warm and the aircon doesn't work. I gave it a charge and
it worked for just a day. I did notice that when I removed the charge canister connector that there was a bit of hissing and bubbling so I'd like to try and replace the valve core. Is this something anyone can do or is it best to leave it to a specialist?

The schreader core, once removed will lose all gas unless recovered safely. They are cheap and readily available from the likes of HRP, dean and mood etc (I have no idea if they're normal schreaders or HP ones).
A core tool is inexpensive for removal and installation of the new one.
I'm sure I have some (and tool) which you'd be welcome to borrow if you're local to bristol.

You can buy a tool that removes the shraeder valve, then shuts of, so you can remove the core and replace with a new one without decanting the system. It is illegal to let the refrigerant go to atmosphere, so doing it right is the safe and environmentally friendly way to do it. 8)

I was going to add it's illegal to knowingly vent the gas to atmosphere but if it's leaking I guess it's pointless making that commnet!

You will want to vacuum the system down after that level of messing around so a specialist is probably best.

I think you are right andyl. Just need to find a specialist that's only going to do the work needed and not look for any extra. Any recommendations? Halfords Autocentre?

I don't think I would ever recommend Halfords Autocentre!

I would normally suggest a mobile aircon guy. Do you have a local garage you trust that you could ask they normally get mobile guys in to sort out aircon instead of keeping the kit themselves.
