I've read it's as simple as replacing a light switch (which I can do)
I want to replace a bog standard dial one like this:

With a programmable one like this:

Any gotchas? Or still simple, turn off power and wireup?
Very easy. Though depending on your wiring you might need to add a link between the live powering the thermostat and the switched contact. And if you have a programmer it'll need setting to "always on" or the thermostat will power off with the heating.
You can get a Honeywell programmable thermostat that takes batteries if this causes a problem.
