Morning

I'm wanting to clean some render off the edge of some indian stone steps and wondered what the best way to go about it was, any advice appreciated

hammer and chisel, i shouldn't bother tho, its probably just nasty stuff behind...

you could run an angle grinder along at the depth of the slabs and then chip it off the slab edges with a hammer and bolster. Will be a long job though, I suspect.

Personally, I'd just paint right to the lip and leave it at that.

I didn't mean off the whole face just the edges of the 'treads' if that makes sense

what he said but use a hammer and scutch chisel

They're usually riven at daft angles so you probably won't have a nice neat edge. They're all different thicknesses too, that's why your builder has rendered right up to the lip...

It's a botch job anyway! The flags should be overhanging maybe with a small groove cut into the edge of the underside, so water can drip off. At present or after you clean the edge of the flag off, the water will soak into or get behind the render. Come winter when it freezes, the render will bust off.
The easiest way to rectify it would be to lay some more flags on top, leaving a overhang and point up with mortar.
