I’d would like some new headphones, they mostly be used for commuting on a train, the odd bit In the office and the odd flight. They’ll be likely connected to Spotify through an iPhone. So, the requirements are:

Bluetooth rather than wired

Closed back for minimal noise leakage

Maybe noise cancelling but not that fussed

Versitile in that they’ll be used for podcasts and spoken word to trance and house to rock.

Ideally phone control but not essential

Under £100

Any suggestions?

Do they have to be BT?  For £100 you'll get far more bang per buck wired.

That said I got my wife a pair of Philips SHB3165's and they are pretty good for the money (£65 or so from memory).  I will happily listen to them if I need to and I do most of my listening on HifiMan HE1000 v2's and a Trilogy headphone amp.

Apart from the £100 bit, airpods are fantastic.

I’d like them to be Bluetooth, yes, no reason other than pure preference.

They don’t need to be an audiophile’s delight, id just like if they don’t sound terrible.

I got some Sony ZX770BN headphones for Christmas and they are really good; noise cancelling and Bluetooth. Battery life is around 15hrs I think, they charge quick and you can use an included cable if the battery dies.

Lindy do some that get a very good write up...can't remember the model, something like nx60.

Anker Sound Surge. Way better than the price suggests.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071GNH9MT/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Feel free to send me the £80 you’ll save.

I got the Sony 770BNs above last month. I really like them. The noise reduction isn't amazing but enough to drown out most of the racket on a recent long haul flight. (It was a noisy old BA 747)

I'd heard about the Lindy ones, may have a look at those.

And though i'm sure those Anker ones will do the job I want some over ear "cans", not in ears jobs.

Those Sony jobs, are they over ear or on ear? Comfortable? It's between those and the Lindy's I think.

I got a pair of the AKG's - great 'phones. Comfortable and battery lasts a surprisingly long time.

Well, this is harder than I thought it'd be.

Lindy BNX-60 - All of the feature I want but picked up a pair and they just felt a bit cheap and nasty. A shame but there we go. They're off the list.

Sony ZX770 - Looked perfect, felt great in the shop...no stock...and now it's discontinued, no stock at any sensible price either.

AKG Y50BT - After trying a few pairs on I have concluded I want over ear and not on ear. So they're out too.

Sennheiser HD 4.40BT - Look OK but felt cheap and nasty on the ear. Didn't like the sound either.

So I think it's going to be a pair of Sony CH700's which are more than i wanted to pay but there we go. Unless of course anyone has any better ideas...?

@lunge - I got the ZX770BN from Amazon after trying them on in Currys. They are over ear and very comfy.

EDIT: unless the noise-cancellation is very important to you, I'd get some normal Bluetooth headphones as they should have much better sound quality at that price point

Hmmm, I am not entirely sure I totally agree. I like generally mine and the sound is very good (much better than the bundled wired ones you get with iPhones) however I sometimes get dropout when my phone is in my pocket (especially if my hands are in there too) and can only remedy by turning the phone (6s) upside down in the pocket. Not a huge deal I know, but at £145, I'd expect a better connection. And twice now (in the two months of owning them) they have completely lost connection altogether – like this morning when I was sat on the train listening away when suddenly the sound went odd. It turned out the AirPods had just switched off and the sound was coming out of the phone speaker and I had to reconnect.

ElShalimo, see above. They're an old model and increasingly difficult to get hold for for a reasonable price. And noise cancellation isn't that important, just seems the one's I'm looking at have it.
