I've got a HTC desire and could do with some recommendations for good apps.

Could do with some bike related ones, games, digital radio, podcast downloader, and anything else that you think is worth a look.

Haven't had mine that long, but the ones I've found to be of use so far are
Viewranger - only a beta version that you can get from the viewranger site not the market, but good if you already have the maps.
Google Latitude - get free turn by turn navigation
Cardiotrainer & sportstracker - both good for recording rides/run/walks
Advanced task killer - for shutting down selected apps that continue to run in the background
Google sky map - if you're interested astronomy
RAC traffic
Sky news
Unit converter

I've only scratched the surface of the android market, so I'd be interested in what other recommend too.

What format are those maps in? Are they the same as the Memory Map ones which I already have?

I think the Viewranger maps are in their own format and the Memory Map ones don't work... unfortunately.. but it does look very lovely on the big screen. Only issue with VR is that it doesn't support pinch to zoom, but that's a minor niggle really.

As for other apps... I use My Tracks at the moment for logging rides and the like, but am gonna investigate Cardiotrainer and others to see what they are like.

Google Listen is a podcast downloader, but have only used it a little bit, so not sure really how good it is.

Google Goggles is quite cool... take a photo of something and it will try and search for it on the net.

I also use Battery Time Light to keep a check on battery life, it's a little more accurate that the little bar at the top.

Photoshop mobile for tweaking pictures..

Opera Mini browser for when you are in an area with dodgy reception, as it uses less bandwidth than the full browser.

There's loads though...

i am keeping an eye on alpinequest, a GPS/ OS Map app. it is only a few weeks old but the developer reckons it will get full gpx functionality over the next few weeks. it differs from the other free GPS apps in that it stores the maps that you create on the SD card so you don't need to rely on GPS. Also means you don't need to download when you are abroad! All maps are free to download, including a fair coverage of Europe.
i don't think it will have as many tools as viewranger (you don't need them all anyway!), but currently there is a free demo lite version on the market. there is a paid full version for something like 3 euros, but there isn't much extra functionality at the moment.
it is worth checking out before forking out for the maps for viewranger. website of info is available HERE

I've just got a Desire too and posted the same query over the weekend, have a quick search.

The query I still have, is there a better app for hotmail as I really dislike the default email system

My biggest issue with VR in it's current form is that it is missing so much of what I was used to with the symbian version. No option to change to bike computer type screen, no option to take picture and mark that as a waypoint, and no way to lock the screen and continue to view the map.
Hopefully these will all be included in the full version.

I'm using

3gwatchdog to monster data usage
Handcent - better sms/mms client
Navigator - Satnav part of Google maps and its great
The various bar code scanners are a fun gimmick
Google sky

As for app killers, Google "why I don't need task killer in Android" - apparently its much more economical to leave things in the background rather than force them to close.

Also there seems to be a bug in the calendar app on some handsets that stops the device going to sleep - hence severely affecting battery life. Easily fixed by force stopping it in the application manager (settings, manage apps, calender). Again, Google it for more info.

Enjoy - I love mine 🙂

Are there any equivalent apps to the iphone's wunderadio on android?
The only thing missing for me is 6music and talkspite when I'm at work. Did a search on market and all the hits seem to have problems according to the ratings.

Defaultslipper - Re Aplinequest, which maps did you use? I'm guessing the UK one linked from the website?

If you want to create your own custom maps then you have to download the AQM Map Creator, there is a link on the page i gave above. Once you have downloaded that, start up the Map Creator and you have access to OS Maps for most of Europe. If you are looking for the UK OS Maps, use the 'Multimap UK OS Map' from the dropdown in the top left corner. There are instructions on the AlpineQuest website on how to use MapCreator to save your files. Once you have saved the maps, just copy them over to your SD card and you get full OS mapping for your selected area.

I have tried using the demo links that are linked to again on alpinequest but for some reason they don't agree with my phone. all the custom maps i have created seem to work fine. i am looking forward to the development over the next few weeks before paying the 3 euros for the full map features. It looks like it will be pretty similar to viewranger, but without the need for buying new maps each time you go somewhere new.
