Ok Guys & Girls I think it's time I updated my music collection. What new artists should I be listening to? I'll listen to pretty much any genre of music.

Find a radio station you like. Find their play list. Buy the albums containing the songs you like.

There isn't any good new music any more apart from the Manics and Andalucia by Doves. It's all been done before.

Old is the new, new...

As an edited response to the previous post. Biffy, are you kidding?
Now a total sell out. Listen to the Vertigo of Bliss and Infinity Land...

each to their own - Saw Biffy supporting Muse at wembley and they were amazing! since bought about 4 of their albums. who cares if theyve gone mainstream- they deserve to make a good living from their work. Or maybe they should keep their kudos and sell 5 records a year in Fife!!

actually forgot the Postcards from a young man - absolutely love that album a real return to form. deserves more recognition but sadly we live in a pop world where shite is king. see cheryl cole/simon cowell etc etc

In the last couple of weeks I have just bought Dark Side of the Moon (well overdue) and the best of Neil Young (some amazing works on that), so plenty of good stuff to be had, if you look back over the decades.

These purchases were alongside Kate Walsh, Lissie and Rumer with some Fink, more Floyd and Everything but the Girl on order.

Hard Fi's debut SOCCTV was also one of my favorites when it first came out.

I really rate the Rumer album, which is odd because whenever there are old clips of Karen Carpenter on TV I wonder what all the fuss was about, plus I have no tolerance for bad 70's dress sense.

Perfecto Fluoro, mixed by Paul Oakenfold.

Nearly 15 years old and it's yet to be topped as a techno/electronic/whateveryoucallit mix album.

I'm really liking the new My Chemical Romance album. Got a bit of a retro 80's feel about it, but very good.

New Manics album is also another stonker

I'm always slightly perturbed when asked 'what music should I listen to?'...if you're into music you won't need to ask because you spend time to go out and find it, you go to gigs, you listen to Marc Riley Mon - Thurs. Most of what people go to the trouble of posting (on here) will be missed or ignored because you will get ALOT of people adding their 2p, and sorting the wheat (Joan as Policewoman) from the Chaff (Biffy Clyro) isn't easy, but then you did ask. Music is a deeply personal and often divisive topic.

My 2p spread bet of old, recent and new:

Field Music
Deerhoof
Dirty Projectors
Smog
Sonic Youth
Rainer Ptacek
Giantsand
Lightning Bolt
Throwing Muses
Everything Everything
Low

Listening to British Sea Power at the moment.
Canvey Island is a great track.

Oddly, also into the soundtrack to a film I saw recently, called Flashbacks of a Fool.

I need to find some new bands to listen to as well.
Just bought, and have it on constant repeat in the car, Less Than Jake's GNV FLA which I think is superb.
Any ideas of similar stuff?
Unfortunately I don't get to listen to much music, and the stuff I like is never on the radio anyway.
I do like all sorts but I like my guitars fast and precise, drums too but nor metal.

Listened to the Jazz hour on R2 last night on the way back home and I loved every song! Need to find out more....

Just got an album by a new (ish) band called Erland and the Carnival. They're a cross between Arcade Fire and The Oyster Band, if that makes sense. The leader is ex-Verve, I think. Highly recommended, a bit different.

New Faithless album is good.

Richard Thompson's got a new album out - not his best, but his worst is better than most people's best, IMHO.

Missed this. What a fool (unless it's ironic, then "haha!")

Can someone explain Holy F--- to me?
What i heard sound like bland rock instrumentals. Am I missing something, or am I just not swayed by the interesting name?

Yes, I've been liking these. CC growing on me after initially thinking it was not so good as debut (it isn't, but it's still good).

Best CD I got this year was Optimo Fabric mix, amazingly subtle and melodic dance music mix.

New LCD Soundsystem is good, so is Four Tet.

Nothing I've heard this year to measure up to my faves from last year though - The Very Best - Warm Heart of Africa and The Low Anthem album.

Both instant classics.

Crystal Castles surprised me - I thought they were just ok on "Later", so didn't bother with them.
Then got some free downloads from rcrdlbl.com and listened to the albums - they're actually quite bonkers (in a good way).
Definitely worth checking.

Saw this as well and thought “ignorant tw4t”. Sorry, but I see people writing letters into the Daily Wail saying similar things and it's just so much bo11ocks, there's always something new to be discovered. I listen to 6Music, watch Later..., buy The Word magazine and read the reviews and listen to the free cd, which always gets ripped into iTunes and put on the 'Pod. I can't afford to buy all the new stuff I keep discovering. Naranjada put it really well, I thought.
Anyway, a couple more artists I've thought of:
The Pierces
Aimee Mann
Andrew Bird
Angus and Julia Stone
Asobi Seksu
Auf Der Maur
Battles
Beirut
Big Star
Black Mountain
Blonde Redhead
Broken Social Scene
Burial
Calexico
Camera Obscura
Camille
Cortney Tidwell
Curve
Dark Star (a very loud three-piece)
Death Cab For Cutie
The Delgados/Emma Pollock
6by9
Eddie Reader
Elliot Smith
Gemma Heyes
Glasvegas
Halloween, Alaska
The Hooters
Howling Bells
Lush
Maria McKee
Mechanical Bride
Pony Up!
Pretty Girls Make Graves
Rosie Vela
The Shins
Sunny Day Sets Fire
Talk Talk
Tiger
Tokyo Police Club
Seal Cub Clubbing Club
Tuung
The Wailin' Jennies
XTC
Those are some I've picked off of my 'Pod. There's many, many more on there, but most are more obvious ones like Elbow, The Foo's, Soundgarden, Faith No More...

Both from their 2nd, and imo by far best album. It really is a great listen. Their new one is taking a while to grow on me though.

If you like Queens of the Stoneage (imho it's a bit more Kyuss even, but that's a sacred band so let's not compare it to them), I'd recommend this:

http://3voor12.vpro.nl/tv/#/41129552/44218814/2

Just bite through the first 1,5 minute introduction gobble in Dutch. It's a Belgian band called triggerfinger whom I had never heard of, but their latest single and album 'all this dancin' around' truly sounds reallygood. They are also compared with Led Zep sometimes, but I don't really get that one.

p.s. good website to listen/look at some concerts as well.

May I heartily endorse BoardinBob's suggestion of John Grant's 'Queen of Denmark'.
It is my album of the year - no argument.

In fact, here's a tip....go buy the music magazines such as Mojo, the Word, Uncut and so on. Their January issues (out around now) will have top lists for 2010, which may give you some guidance if you wish to do some compare/contrast exercises.

FWIW, Mojo's number 1 album of 2010?........John Grant's 'Queen of Denmark'.

Happy listening.

I'm listening to this An open letter to the scene while getting excited about the return of Rival Schools, but that's probably just me.

As for people moaning about Biffy, they made records, they still make records, they used to be a little more obscure, they focussed their style a bit more, they still make cracking albums, and yes I do love Vertigo of Bliss, but seriously get over yourself 🙂

I'd second listening to a bit of 6 music too, apart from the Huey Morgan show, there's just something not right about that.
