MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
hey all (particularly web designers...)
i'm looking for a decent web design tool to create a basic but slick looking site for my partner's new bakery business. it would be safe to assume that i know absolutely nothing about web design, the internet, etc etc !!
we'll get one professionally done when we've got the cash, but in the mean time i want to get a simple site up and running to get the word out. our domain name is registered already
alternatively if there are any web designers out there who are at a loose end, and will accept cakes as payment, then maybe we can do a deal 🙂
Have a look at Photium off-the-shelf websites .
Althought they're designed for photographers, I've seen some great looking sites from other businesses. Dead easy to use interface which is constantly improving, built in shopping cart, the lot - and all for £7 odd a month.
Click my user name to see mine (desperately wants updating!) or have a look at my other bikey website which I put up ages ago and have hardly looked at...
Joomla
ohhh free cakes you say...
do you have an idea of the sort of thing you want as this can often be the most time consuming part of simple sites?
either way if you want to discuss a trade my email is in profile as potentially there could be something you could do for me.
You can build very nice looking sites with blog based system like Wordpress or Blogger, also means they are easy to keep upto date.
I don't think thats the best advice for a total beginner who probably has no need for the extended features that Joomla offers. Whilst its a perfectly good content management system Wordpress is much easier to "find your way" as a beginner.Quirrel - MemberJoomla
I think there are people offering Wordpress hosting preinstalled and ready to go - whereas with Joomla you'll probably need to upload it to the server yourself which for a total beginner is one more step to put you off.
joomla comes reinstalled as well
I used Mr site, I loved it if you cluck the banner on my site you get the first year fir £15 piss easy to use and great support. Easy to do everything and you can chat to the staff for free via a built in messenger service. It's about £7 a month after your first year but depends in how many megabytes you need. If your with HSBC you can get the £100 pro version for £50. Everything was so easy to use and staff so helpful.
... I found Mr site so much easier than word press
Joomla and Wordpress I'd say. Any hosting site wort it's dough will allow automatic installation if both, there's plenty of them but I use justhost.
hey all
cheers for the replies. i will check out all your recommendations!
we are with HSBC actually so the Mr Site deal might be worth a look
with joomla/wordpress/mr site can you choose your own web address?
i know that with some of the free ones you might end up with a web address like moonfruit.xxxxx.com or something.
we've already paid for a domain name, and i bollocked together a holding page using MS Word (no laughing 🙂 ) www.hartsbakery.co.uk
Phil.W --> sounds interesting, we are in Bristol and my girlfriend does all sorts of stuff like birthday & wedding cakes, bread, pastries, canapes, markets, wholesale stuff. you name it! (roll up roll up) i'll get her to mail you 🙂
You can point your domain name wherever you like, so long as you've not registered it with a bunch of asshats.
i created a site from scratch using joomla - no previous web knowledge, if its too daunting then, as cougar states, you can point your domain name wherever you like - i did this with my personal site and used office live's free website service. have a look on my info for my site or the adrenaline gateway site as they use office live's free hosting too.
i've done a temporary website using a program called Sea Monkey by Mozilla. definately recommend it for simple sites. it's really easy to use and not too dumbed down, just a basic HTML package. i guess you'd need to know what you're doing to do anything fancy
i did have a look at Joomla. it looked easy on the face of it and had loads of templates, but i lost patience trying to do really basic stuff. perhaps it would be better if you're doing a big website. i'll keep trying with it though
see what you think... feedback welcome!!
