One for the car, not for biking.

I've had experience with Garmin and TomTom which I've either borrowed off mates or used in their cars, and the Garmin seems to be the most user-friendly; I didn't really get on with the TomTom. So, any particular ones people can recommend? A quick search for 'Garmin sat nav' on Amazon throws up ones which have generally positive reviews but tend also to be quite mixed; some one and two stars reviews also.

I would go for Garmin, if only because our local Garmin rep is a top bloke and their customer service is spot on.
Go to Halfords to get it, usually cheapest and do half price accessories when you buy.
Avoid Navman, RAC etc.

Put some software on your smartphone if you've got one. Copilot is good and only £20.

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 1310 that I'm planning to eBay - fire me an email if you'd like to chat before I ebay it!

It's great, dead simple to use, I just never really travel to need it, so it's been sat pretty much unused. Moving house, so clearing things out!

I have had two TomToms (one stolen) and as navigation devices they have been great - easy to use and simple to update. The thing that irritates me is that I sometimes find it difficult to press the write buttons. Probably more to do with my fat fingers than anything else though. Overall would be a safe choice.

I've had a Garmin 1490T for a couple of years now, it was a bit buggy to start with but the regular Garmin software updates sorted that. I've also got the Garmin Ecoroute HD bluetooth device that works with it (it plugs into the car OBDCII port and sends engine data to the GPS).

I got mine here:- http://www.satnaveasy.co.uk/garmin-nuvi-14xx-series-c252.html I see they're £135.60 now.

I find tomtoms far easier to use than garmins, used to be ahead in terms of being able to cut out certain roads or go via certain points on the fly.

That said, I'd not buy another dedicated satnav unless I were doing mega mega miles to unknown destinations. Phones do a cracking job of it now, and are in many ways better - no need to know full addresses with google maps, just search for the restaurant or pub name, or just search for a supermarket or whatever.

I've used both Garmin and TomTom, and although I prefer the user friendliness of the Garmin, I'd go for a TomTom every day of the week. Yes the Garmin is nice to use has some great features, but boy do they play up, my colleague and I have to travel together to a lot of jobs and he always ends up following me as his Garmin is playing up again!

I went through two Garmins very quickly and they had so many problems I just exchanged them, eventually getting fed up and going to TomTom Although again Garmins customer service is excellent compared to TomToms who service is shit!

Thanks all. I'll go to Halfords tomorrow and compare their deals with some online ones. Thanks for the offer simonbrowns - I've googled it and it seems to be an older model; I'd rather stick with newer ones due to having the latest software (less chance of bugging, etc).
