Just bought a Logitech K350 wireless keyboard and I'm very disappointed with it. The key action feels awful - very cheap compared to my old Microsoft.
So what would people recommend for general duties, surfing web etc but very little gaming. No price limit (within reason)and must be wireless aswell.
cheers

Interesting! doesnt look so ergonomic, how does it feel to type on? Also about how much are they?
cheers
+1.
Spiritual successor to the IBM Model M, which was officially the Best Keyboard In The World Ever.
UK supplier - http://www.getdigital.de/products/Das_Keyboard_Model_S/lng/en
They are a bit 'niche' though. You can cope without a Windows key, right?
Last time I bought a keyboard, I wandered round PC World first, prodding all their displays.
how much?!
why not just get another wireless microsoft one at £14?
Really like the look of the daskeyboards but slightly put off by the american layout only - cougar and graham, how do you find this?
also came across this 🙂
If you look at my link, there's UK (and EU?) layouts.
I've known about them for years, discovered them when trying to source a Model M. Never actually used one though.

cheers Cougar, I can see that now, I think its only the newer ones that are in US setup only?? Not sure what EU set up is? Off to find out now...
Never actually used one. I just know they are popular with folk who like mechanical switch keyboards rather than the usual mushy membrane ones.
This is worth a read: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2010/10/the-keyboard-cult.html
The other one I always wanted was this,
http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/customizer.html
Made by the people who used to make the old IBM keyboards.
What is a wireless keyboard actually for ?
I use a model M at work - it's given 16 years of good service so far. If you can get hold of one, I'd recommend it.

Idiots?
Serious answer - presentations.

How much do you want for it? (-:
Macintosh keyboards are very nice in my opinion. Perhaps go and try some?
By far the best keyboards I ever used were the ones on the Sun Sparcstations we had at uni. Wonderful things.. my fingers get a shiver of excitement now just thinking about them.. plus extra keys for copy, paste etc too 🙂
Wireless keyboards btw are for those who want to get rid of ugly tangles of wires. We have a fold-town table in the corner of the spare room for our desktop pc. With a wall-mounted monitor, you can put the keyboard and mouse on the shelf, fold the table down and voila - computer is out of the way for guests etc. At least that's the theory 🙂
I thought that Das Keyboard looked good until I saw the price.
I'll stick to my trusty HP one which is at least 10 years old. Must clean it one day - eeewww!
OP said no price limit and that's the one I'd go for with no price limit 🙂
I'd probably go for the one with no labels on the keys just to **** with people 😀
Besides it's cheap compared to an Optimus Maximus keyboard
Like the look of this, if a bit pricey:

Also love the sheer geekiness of the optimus maximus.
But realistically its either this:
http://www.daskeyboard.com/model-s-ultimate/
or this for me:
http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/customizer.html
Bear in mind, the 'Ultimate' is blank keys; the 'Professional' has printed keycaps.

I'm thinking that it'll force me to learn to touch type!!
BTW the Das Keyboard is wired. Not sure they do a wireless version.

Yeah, I realise that now but think I can live with that.
Only downside I've read is that they attract a lot of dust and dirt onto the keyboard...
The model M at work is not for sale ( and a Swiss-German layout would mess with your head anyway ).
The 2 that I have in my parents loft are also not up for grabs - I'm 38 now, and should have no more keyboard purchases between now and retirement. 🙂

Are you mad, that'll keep your grandchildren in keyboards.
Also, I hate you.
(-:
*notices that I have a spare Swiss-German keyboard on the top of the cupboard*
*decides it's best not to mention it*
I have a couple of NOS IBM Model M (1391406)s sitting unused at home, which had a very litle use before I switched to the Goldtouch keyboards as I didn't want a keypad getting in the way of reaching for the mouse.
But I also see a couple on ebay if anyone is lusting after one.
TurnerGuy
fancy selling me one of your model Ms?
In case anyone is still reading this (!), I'm goinmg for one of these:

I got a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 + mouse combo. Nice and quiet, some extra function keys and battery life in the mouse is measured in months rather than the four weeks I'd get out of my HP mouse. Only downside is the mouse isn't rechargeable...but it was on expenses and I didn't think I could justify spending more.
Replaced the horrible rattly thing (and its rattly Argos replacement that got returned after the 'type your name' test whilst sitting in the van), reason for going wireless is my work laptop has two USB ports, and thats it. No dedicated keyboard or mouse ports either. So with a memory stick/phone lead in regular use, I needed keyboard and mouse to work off a single USB socket.
Edit: I also have a wireless trackball keyboard designed for use on your lap, great if you like to plug your laptop into the TV every now and then. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=wireless+keyboard+with+trackball&cid=18121159853948175729&ei=JpbKTNiTPKbewQXo3e27BQ&sa=title&ved=0CBoQ8wIwAzgA#p

Out of stock til Dec/Jan!!
She was run over...
Hitman, if you're getting that Filco, the other option with Cherry MX Blue switches is the Cherry G80. http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=510
I believe the Das Keyboard is based on the Cherry G80. That's the one I'm thinking of buying.

Cheers, I know its essentially the same keyboard but with eastern european styling circa 1970 :).... not sure I could live with it every day although functionally I bet it's fine
Well, I ended up getting this in the end:

I've had it for about a week or so now, and the difference between this and any other keyboard I've used is amazing. It's such a pleasure to use and for the first time ever, I'm learning to touch type. Also The Keyboard Company gave me fantastic service and were a pleasure to deal with - thoroughly recommended 🙂
superb! a work of art...
