We bought this coffee machine last week, its died after 3 cups with a water leak at the back of the boiler... 🙄

Is it worth changing to the pricier Gaqgia for about £40 more?

I have that delonghi. It's utterly shit. Barely works after a few months. I should have known better. I shall never buy a delonghi product again. Live and learn.

for me you can not beat on price or quality of coffee a traditional italian expresso maker

several of those bean to cup type machines have a separate chute for a 2nd coffee type.

for the proper classic, slightly more manual machines, it's not even an applicable question.

both let you use any kind of coffee you like from any source you like 🙂 (except ones in funky satin colour foil capsules of course 😉 )

Will be buying a Gaggia Classic in the next day or so, now that my Senseo piece of cack finally died.

Gaggia Classic here. The joy of getting a fresh bag of beans from hasbean is something I have become pretty obsessed with...

JL don't have the classic listed... Might see if they can order it. Madbill, we already have one of those 😉

+1 MadBill.

Why spend loads of money when one of those makes just as nicer/nicer coffee.

Fair enough if you are runing a cafe, buy a machine, but if its just for one or two cups, you cnt beat them

JL don't really stock much Gaggia stuff. Don't know why, but when I asked about getting a Gaggia Baby they weren't interested in ordering anything special in. That's despite Philips now owning Gaggia.

kidding your self if you think a stove top makes "as" nice a coffee ... it makes coffee yes , you might like it yes and it might be cheaper , yes

but do I prefer a real espresso over the often burnt offerings that comes out of stove tops. Yes - infact if you like starbucks i see the atraction to the stove top - the coffees taste similarly burnt.

I bought this this from John Lewis a few weeks back and I love it.

It does normal coffee and nespresso pods so is the best of both worlds.

+1(ish) Trail-rat

I have a Bialetti stove top pot and a Gaggia classic.

Both make very, very nice coffee but they are different - even with the same coffee.

I use the Bialetti for a quick fix and the Gaggia when I have more time and am feeling decadent.

Stove tops don't generate anywhere near enough pressure to extract the oils from the coffee that you need for a proper espresso. Nice coffee though and I do use them when on holiday. Had my STW standard Gaggia Classic about a year now and use it pretty much every day. It's been brilliant.

I still don't really get the quick argument for pods (and especially for stove tops.) Once heated up it takes me a couple of minutes at most to grind some beans, distribute, tamp, then pull a shot. Just how time pressed are people in the mornings?

We have the Dualit Espressivo, probably about 5 years of at least 4 cups per day, went back last year for a fault that was fixed pronto for £30 inc postage.

Unless your leaving you machine on all day, there'll be a compromise somewhere.

Got a Dualit 3in1 thing ( http://www.dualit.com/products/coffee-machine) a couple weeks ago. Normal espresso machine but can also take NX (copies of Nespresso) pods with an adapter. Best of both worlds maybe?

Tried a few NX capsules and coffee was average at best (but quick). Haven't dialed in the grind yet to make a good ground coffee espresso yet to comment on the normal side of things...

eBay Gaggia Classic. Loads of 'used twice, put it on the shelf' come up there. Spend your JL credit on something else.

This is true. I've been using a stove top pot for a few years and it's good but there's almost no crema unlike a machine. Very good for down at the beach hut though.

Well you need to buy a grinder as well as the coffee machine (unless you go pre-ground) and then make it and then clean up afterwards - and I hate cleaning coffee grounds away.
A pod machine takes no time at all, no grounds to clean up, you can try lots of different coffee's very easily and [most importantly] ANYONE can make a great cup of coffee.

"gaggia manual service" - guy was very very helpful with email advice to get my Gaggia running again and I think he sometimes sells reconditioned units -

Stoves tops are fine. I'm yet to taste anything as good as the flat cap chaps in borough market, so I don't bother trying anymore, done the whole grinding beans malarky too, I use it to grind spices now, much better use for it.

I've one of the older Dualits ; the Espressivo that takes the E.S.E pods and regular ground.

Have used both ways regularly .. slighly less cleaning up with the pods though maybe a little softer edged too than a decent ground.

Both have been *officially appreciated* by my *official Italian (Milan)* friends .. whom interestingly enough run a nespresso or stove top when they're in the mood.

I like Dualit products in general for the fact that in (a sort of) essence their a local product as their based in Crawley. Give or take the odd bit of Chinese sub-assembly I guess.

This one with the milk jug is about £100 at Costco http://www.johnlewis.com/dualit-844-coffee-system-and-jug/p231549138?colour=Polished%20Steel

Very tempted to buy one every time I go in but I really want a bean to cup

Interesting. Is that proper crema or just a bit of froth? Guessing it has some sort of pressure valve.

There's a weight on top of the central spout that doubles the pressure in the pot to 2 bar IIRC or does that sound unrealistic? Anyhoo...

Yep, can turn out quite frothy, but usually a reasonable, long lasting (so not just bubbles I think) crema can be got.

An old Gaggia Coffee Deluxe here - would replace it with its modern equivalent in an instant if it ever died. Amazon have the Gaggia Classic for £170 at the moment.

JL don't have the classic listed... Might see if they can order it.

the gaggia in your pic has the same group head, boiler, over-pressure valve, solenoid and steam wand as a classic
