.....for 11 people for my last meal as an un-married man! I have aload of family coming over from Switzerland for the wedding and would like somewhere with some character but not too expensive.

I wanted to book Mud Dock but they want a £5 per head up front and a pre-order for the food!!!!! How the **** do i do that when everyone is coming from abroad! Is that normal?

Any idea very much appreciated.

Nick.

You are likely to have to pay a deposit up front for that number of people in most restaurants - it is returnable.

On the more specific topic of restaurants I would recommend one of the following:
Culinaria - Chandos Road, Redland (one of the best restaurants in Brizzle IMO)
River Station
Bordeaux Quay - though downstairs rather than upstairs
Seven Shed
Kensington - Redland
Pump House - though a bit expensive

Have had lovely meals at the Riverstation (tea smoked tuna mmmm....) and it's a really nice place. The other restaurant that sticks in my mind is Byzantium, N African, another lovely place, atmospheric, quirky decor. My info is 3 - 4 years out of date though. There are loads of good places to eat in Bristol, have fun!

River Station, Severn Shed, Bordeaux Quay (though again, downstairs in the Bistro but I don't think they let you book).

El Puerto is very good.

Howards does good food but small portions and is getting increasingly Shabby Chic...

IMO Mud Dock's got a good atmosphere but the food's not great.

Lockside is good too

Yes they do. We were there last Saturday - nice enough place & decent food.

Have gone with River Station as i have been for lunch there a few years ago and the above recommendations reminded me of that!

Didn't have to pay a deposit either. Mud Dock must have a policy of putting people off that place. I like it for a coffee/beer or maybe lunch but to ask for a deposit and food pre-order is absurd.

Interestingly the chap i spoke to at River Station told me pre-orders are more hassle than its worth! I guess that Mud Docks chefs are easily snowed under????!

Thanks for the advice.

Never been terribly impressed with Howards for the money myself clubber.

The GF and I like The Olive Shed down by the Industrial museum an awful lot. Pretty small though so you'd have to ask if they can do 11 peeps. The Italian red on the wine list is absolutely gorgeous.

They did over salt my steak last time we went though. A bit disappointing.

Indeed, and it was good enough pearl jam for me to continue recommending them ...
