Can anyone recommend a good alehouse in Stockport? Somewhere fairly central in the town (also not the Magnet or the Crown, good though they are, as I fancy going somewhere different).

Pushing the boat out here, but does anyone also know of a nice place to get lunch in the 'Port?

The Stockport Clarion use the Arden Arms (over near Sainsburys / Asda) as their meeting spot.

Wouldn't go drinking in the middle of stockport, myself...

That is not something you would normally see in the same sentence.

Arden arms. Otherwise don't bother.

It has to be The Crown, 5 minutes from the train station under the viaduct arches and opposite Kwik Fit. There's usually around 14 ales on and an extensive menu consisting of one item 'pork pie'. What more do you want?

Seriously though, it's one of a dying breed, a proper drinking pub. None of this: we do food and some drinks, its just ale all the way.

The Crown is a serious drinking venue, no doubt. Could give the Arden arms a go, thks for the suggestion. V close to the source of the Mersey, so must be Holy ground.

Heard good things about the Railway, which is not too far from the Arden arms. (site of old Teviot Dale railway)
