So it's time to buy a family tent! Would like a proper stand up tent, with a porch etc and a bit of internal space for storing bikes and stuff.

There's 4 of us btw, budget is probably up to £350

Cheers

Cotswold have some good deals at the moment. We're always had Wild Country and have been very happy with them.

I recently bought a Coleman 4 man tent and it seems well made. If I'd have had the cash though, I would have bought an Outwell

We bought one of these last year:
Vango Tigris 400DLX

Its very very spacious inside, lots of headroom, plenty of room for kitchen area, table+chairs, plus bikes and gear. Very good value for money.

Ive just bought one of these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330564569011&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_5474wt_754

not tested it yet, packing the camper van this weekend for our annual trip where it will get its first outing.

Its a big pop up tent that we can use as a dorm/eating/storing area at campsites so the four of us arent cramped in the van too much. You can add the pop up bedroom tents to each of the 4 ports so everyone has their own bedroom too.

Cost £220 ish and you can get quechua pop up tents bedrooms for about £0-40 each

Have a look on Gooutdoors, they have a great deal on at the moment for a High Gear Mojave. It is exactly the same as a Gelert Lakesbury which we have, they are huge inside, two bedrooms which are totally separate so you can pull one or both down to have even more space in the day. Have used ours a few times now and can highly recommend it, held out some very heavy rain and had a battering from some strong winds. I think they are on sale for £130 at the moment, very good deal if you ask me.....

Just looked and they have gone up to nearly £200 since last night !!!

Vango has just started doing tents with AirBeam 'poles' - they pitch all as one and go up in about 5 minutes, which - if you've ever arsed around trying to pitch a multi-poled family tent - is just brilliant.

The AirBeams works a bit like tyre inner tubes, very stable and virtually unbreakable, they just bend slightly then spring back, you just pump 'em up with a sort of mini track-pump affair, peg out the rest of it and a few guys and you're good to go.

Maybe outside your price range at RRP, but all this stuff gets discounted on line.

Used one last weekend in the Lakes with proper grim weather and thought it was ace. Anyway, just a thought. Those vast family tents are great once you've put them up, but a proper faff.

Go Outdoors do a Vango Maritsa 700 for £450, but you can get it for £387 by using their price beater policy. Just take a print out of the same tent from allweathers.co.uk at £430 into the store, then they beat that price by 10%. You could also do it over the phone, not sure what the delivery would be though. (you can get anything in GO cheaper this way, just find the same thing cheaper in stock anywhere else)

The tent is fantastic, loads of space in the living area with a porch attached to the front that also zips up fully, perfect for a kitchen area. The sleeping bits are made from dark material that keeps the early morning light at bay, ideal if you've got kids. It only takes about 30 mins to put up but does take 2 people.

Well worth finding the extra bit of cash. If you go to go outdoors, they've usually got one up.

Thanks all, lots to consider

Was set on a modern, fully waterproof thing but qwerty's post and some subsequent searching has thrown a spanner in the works!

Getting new kit is ace isn't it? 🙂

You can add the pop up bedroom tents to each of the 4 ports so everyone has their own bedroom too.

How do you get in?

Would you be interested in buying second hand?

Third picture down

I have one that's only been used once, not sure I'll ever use it again.

Edit:

It's an Outwell Sun Valley 8, it has three modular bedrooms, sewn in ground sheet. Porch area, two side doors and to be fair, more room than you'll ever need. It's a tunnel tent which is relatively easy to put up.

If weight isnt too much of an issue and it's only going to be transported in the car then try to stretch to an Outwell. Had a couple of Colemans & Vangos but last year bought an Outwell with metal frame and sewn in goundsheet. Much better quality and design and worth the extra imho.

Khyam FTW!

Strangely, you could have had our rigipod if my wife had not promised it to her sister.

Large main room, hall, two bed pods, loads of space.

+ another one for an Outwell (Montana 6 would be perfect, but build quality on outwells is IMHO second to none)

I know the budget doesn't cover this but I really don't think you'd regret it if you can stretch an extra £50 for the GoOutdoors deal. And then seriously consider an extra few quid for the groundsheet, makes it far more manageable to not have a sewn in groundsheet covered in mud to contend with at going home time.

We have an Outwell and I agree with the comments about the great quality. Fairly easy to pitch too, which can be a pain with some big tents.

Test erection before packing for hols.

Says it should be 2mins to put up, we managed it for our first time in about 3 minutes in a blustery wind. I reckon 2mins is easily doable now we know what we are doing. Not risked bringing it down yet, going to wait for the wind to die down a bit.

Lots of lovely space. I can stand in the middle at 6'4" and there's still at least 4" spare head room.

Lots of door/vent options. Its not a very rigid design since there is no central spar against which guys can pull, but its stable enough in the wind for now. Flexible design for the future as Stoner Jrs grow up and might want add on space of their own.

Depends how old your kids are - we have an eight year and a four year old, one boy, one girl, and we felt it was worth getting a bigger one so that in 3-4 years time everyone had their own space in the tent.

We are about to get a Vango Tigris 800, plus footprint and porch extension - cheapest deal we found came to just over £400

phew. the monster is packed. took closer to 10 mins for a first time. Takes some manhandling to get it flipped and flopped back into a circle - had to take two goes. Not quite the POP as the little 2second pop ups. But having done it once, pretty confident be able to do it again much quicker and without much thinking required.
