Waaaay off topic but
Can a business that is vat registered reclaim the vat paid to merchant services for the rental of their card machine on their vat return?

unless it comes under "exempt:" on the HMRC list then anything you pay VAT out on can be reclaimed against what you have received in VAT

Look at an invoice for the machine rental - if it shows a VAT amount then that's what can be claimed back.

I think when we get our statements at work the only bit we pay vat on is the rental. Charges are exempt.

Yep, a whole £2.50 a month on the back of £300 fees!
