As an aside I have a firearms cert for 22/250 (foxes and small vermin) and 7.62mm (for deer.) Have shot many. V difficult to get a clean kill over 100meters.

Guns are hard to come by in this country and this is why we have a very low rate of gun murders. Go to the states where guns are easy to get and they have loads of gun murders

I have lived in communities where there would be at least 1 gun per house and usually more. I don't recall any shootings.

Canada has more guns than the United States (mostly because of hunting and protection against wild animals that want to eat you) and there is less gun crime than the USA.

So, it must be a cultural thing. No one NEEDS a gun, unless the other person has one. Which propagates paranoia.

I admit to being fascinated by guns though. I served in the TA for a time and had the priviledge of being able to fire lots of different types but I was trained and supervised and also deemed sane enough to handle them.

I've only ever been accurate with a rifle on static targets, grazing deer, a sniffing fox etc. With a moving target its shotgun, or maybe in this case a machine gun.... I do hope they get him alive though, we need to show him and the world that Moats idea of summary justice is not good. It would also prove that the cops were up to their job. Unfortunately its inevitable that even see him a cop will pop him off.

How mindful would you be of someone else's right to life if you knew that:

1. He had already killed
2. He is unbalanced
3. He has stated that he specifically wants to kill people like you

The police will try to take him alive, but I hope that they don't risk their own lives in doing so.

They should be absolutely mindful of his right to life.

That doesn't mean he won't wind up getting shot, but policemen with machine guns who have stopped worrying about people's right to life is a bad business. If they can't manage professionalism when dealing with bad people then another line of work would seem to beckon.

Robbery is indeed illegal. Bad people do it, but the fact that good people aren't allowed to do it has no impact on bad people doing it. With guns, the argument goes that good people, if they were allowed guns, could then defend themselves against the bad people, who are not prevented from having guns by the fact of their illegality.

The plod-blog quoted on the previous page clamours for guns for plod on the grounds that steroid-freaks can get them. I want one for exactly the same reasons. Prohibition doesn't prevent bad people having them, but does prevent me having one. I am [i]semi[/i] serious. This is starting to get boring, and the commentary is shifting to Sue Sim's general aura of uselessness and her hair. From a media-management point of view it's not ideal. If it all gets quietly wrapped up over a fine weekend when no-one's watching the news the publicity aspects of this won't have been a success. The catching the armed lunatic aspect is obviously in many respects more important, of course. 🙂
