Mum asked the same question when on a river cruise in France, a couple of days before ramming the shore while trying to park.
'Why didn't you put it in reverse to slow down??'

Tomhowards story reminds me,
Got my 64yr old mum to stand on the picnic table for a closer view of the perseid (sp?) meteors at our bbq last night.. 😆
