We've two 10 year springer spaniels that are an absolute joy, no hassle at all and very much part of the family - family pets rather than working dogs. When we got them, it was just pre kids so we were able to devote a fair bit of time, and some consistent training to them.

We're about to get a springer pup - but now we have 2 kids (8 and 10) in the mix. So any tips in terms of:

- introducing the pup to the household
- training with kids wanting to be involved
- making sure all 3 dogs bond
- anything else - it seemed easy first time (with naivety and 'ignorance is bliss', but a little more anxious this time)

Cheers

When you go to pick-up the pup take a blanket that the other dogs have both been sleeping on for the past few days and wrap it around the pup that way when you get home the pup already smells like the other 2dogs and will be accepted as 'family'

IMHO your kids will de-train the puppy at every opportunity

I have no idea, but I am incredibly jealous. I lost my springer a couple of months ago after fourteen lively, joy-filled years with him.

Just enjoy it.

Andy P, I hope you get hit by a truck, real soon!

Get the kids involved in the training so as they understand & know what words to use.
We've have spaniels for 20 years or more, absolute joy but need to be trained. We've got two Welsh Springers now.

As for Andy P, not big, not clever, not funny, not even sick, just pathetic. & I can say that after rescuing animals that have been mistreated.

Puppy being accepted as part of the family by the other dogs? Ah yes... Likely.

We have a two year old male springer and a 6 month old cocker pup and the two of them fight like sods. Ted (older dog)'s trainer has said that he's a lot calmer now and amazingly tolerant of the puppy, but they still fight.

Other than that, buy "Training Spaniels" by Joe Irving. It's our bible, but Ted is a working dog.

I highly recommend you post pictures of the puppy with her/his new housemates on here to help with the training.

Cracking dogs, lost our 12yo a few weeks ago. Would definitely jump at the chance of another, although it would be likely be me doing the de-training.
