Thinking about getting a pull up bar to help a bit with upper body strength (and make me super buff yo). Are the cheap ones any good? Wall or door mount? Extending ones?

Basically what's good and what should I look out for.

I just got a fairly cheap one (£10-£15) from Amazon that has a couple of cups that screw into the door frame, then you extend the bar into the cups. Very solid.

Got it years ago but it looks exactly like this (may even be this exact one) https://www.amazon.co.uk/York-Fitness-60033-Doorway-Chinning/dp/B000N3T1CC/ref=sr_1_39?s=fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1479208783&sr=1-39&keywords=pull+up+bar

I got a very cheap one that hooks over the door frame. The problem was that it relies on doorways being a certain depth, and the only ones in my house that were had a vent in the way on top. I now have a vent cover missing from the spare room. Bit of flex in it in use, but the mounting to the doorframe seems solid enough.

And I am now superbuffyo.

For the money this is the best I found, by a country mile:

You just need a solid wall to fix it to. I build a freestanding frame out of 4"x2" for mine.

this ones cheap and decent. Need a big drill bit for the screws...

The one qwerty posted looks good! It is nice to have a variety of grips and not to worry it is going to fall down on you!

ive got the powerbar 2.

its excellent, and the weight is directed into the wall rather than downwards so its very stable. hook up, do chins, take down, fold away....all easy peasy.

I've got one similar to this in my bedroom doorway.

It's been there for 25yrs, but now all it does is taunt me 🙁

I reckon I'd sooner avoid wall mounted ones as we only have a wee little house and there's not loads of space.

The Power Bar looks like it might be ideal, the trouble being that the only door I could use it in is at the top of the stairs, so if I go a bit wrong I'll probably fall down the stairs backwards. Best get the camera out...

I have one from Amazon that attaches to a door frame without any mounting kit or similar. The tension means it doesn't fall off

It's slightly compromised as a result - not as many hand positions as the wall mounted ones, but it works just fine (if I ever use it)

The fact it comes down in seconds and leaves no marks was the main reason for getting it

Ha no, we have a number of doors but due to the way they open / the crappiness of the walls / the stuff next to them / the height of the ceilings there's really only one I could use one of the non-fitted ones on.

The powerbars are the best imo:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/i48/Powerbar-Welded-Extra-thick-tubular-construction-Assembly/B0043NO1HI/ref=sr_1_24?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1479221570&sr=1-24&keywords=pull+up+bar

They don't damage the doors or walls
They don't rely on wedging or screwing into anything
They fold away
They fit a larger variety of doors

I got a cheap one from ebay first, and it was so badly made it wouldn't go together. I then bought the powerbar.

I have one that's identical to that. But

... is about right. I got it when I was climbing regularly, so it got quite a lot of use. I've not been near it in maybe ten years now.
