MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
My 7 year old has brought a "home" reading book from school that is badly colour photocopied (missing words and bits off the page) This is the 2nd time this has happened in about a month. I wouldn't mind but the school is meant to be "teh asumz" and is in an affluent area.
The wife is going into the school tomorrow to ask WTF is going on?
I wouldn't mind but I secured £25K of funding for them last year!! So what the heck are they spending it on? if there isn't enough text books to go around!
Has anyone else experienced or heard of this? As it's a new one on me!!
No not normal in my experience.
Always a proper book.
Yep - book books here too.
Perhaps they spent your £25k on a **** off big colour copier and thought they'd become the little entrepreneurs...
Ask the copyright holders?

It's disgusting.
Fine for poor kids obviously, but well, as you say it's an affluent area.
Ask for your 25k back.
😀
Ask the copyright holders?
+1
IME, schools are very careful of copyright on text books etc, and all use text books until they are worn out....
Always proper books at my schools.
The only time I photocopy would be the odd page for a comprehension type activity and then make sure it's copied properly.
Ask the copyright holders?
Funny old thing that was my 1st thought 😆

And that is perfectly reasonable 🙂
Where are those bombers?!?!

Obviously not grammar and punctuation guides. 😉
What's the point in all of the kids carrying big heavy textbooks home, if they only need a couple of pages? The books will just get lost, or damaged, or scribbled on.
What's wrong with a photocopy (assuming its decent quality, and actually legible).
Thats probably more expensive than buying the book unless its really short?
I wonder if the decided to use that book then discovered they did not have enough copies so had to hurriedly photocopy a couple of copies
You should write a complaint to Justine Greening immediately. Better still write the letter.....badly photocopy it.....and send that. She how she likes it.

I expects its this
I would add that schools are experiencing a massive funding crisis at the moment so going to the school and moaning at the teacher for having 30 kids and only 20 books is going to be unhelpful at best.

I understand there are issues with funding and classroom numbers, but when the school buys iPads instead of books, I do think WTF? If they are going to go down the avenue of printing or copying books, at least give the kids a fighting chance by having the full sentences/paragraphs on the page.
After a quick Google when I got home last night, it turns out I can get the book as a free e-book (Oxford Owls) so I will put that on the Kindle.

This. As it happens my wife is a primary teacher at a leading school in the NW and I happen to work in the print industry in Higher Education, and I would think its nothing more than the above temporary situation. Tracking materials and books handed to children is a battle of wills. They get lost. Regarding copyright, I wouldn't go in with that angle personally, however they are likely infringing a law there for sure. A teacher wouldn't let a kid go without, to adhere to a copyright law when it came to a handful of resources. They're not likely being tight.

No, it's a crisis. Do you hear? A CRISIS!
This sounds like a daily mail article, I blame the immigrants personally. I do hope you include that this is a nice school and not an inner city pleb school, otherwise it would be perfectly acceptable.
😉

Quite.

Tell you what, rather than dobbing in your own kids teachers to the publishers so they can set their attack lawyers on a primary school, why not just talk to the teacher about it? Crazy idea I know.
At worst they'll put you down on the "Pain In The Arse Parent" list and ensure that the photocopies only go to nasty smelly povvo kids in future.
No, it's a crisis. Do you hear? A CRISIS!
Go visit a school and look at their financial situatio.
The dispute over school funding has been escalating - with head teachers threatening that they could have to start cutting hours or operating four-day weeks.
The Grammar School Heads' Association warned on Wednesday that they could have to ask parents for payments.
Our school has cut 6th form contact hours to cut costs. What goes next?
I wouldn't mind but the school is...in an affluent area.

Dear Headteacher,
I write to you to express some dismay at the recent savage attack your school has made on our house price.
This is an affluent area, and you will note houses are priced accordingly. You can, therefore, imagine the horrified look some of our neighbours had on their faces when they twitched their curtains as Jacintha came home with a photocopy of a textbook!
I know all teachers are Communists, but any more of this sort of thing and I'm afraid we're going to have to stop hosting dinner parties where we all bray about how much our houses have increased in value through no input of our own.
Yours, in disgust.[/i]
local college a few years ago got a huge fine for photocopying text books, its illigal they should know that.
Where are those bombers?!?!
I've looked in the resources cupboard, and they're not there, but they haven't been signed out. Please will everybody remember to sign the bombers out (split infinitive? See me after). Thank you.
That £25k probably went on new toner cartridges.

Samuel got a book (atlas) out his school library last week and it had the USSR not Russia and east/west germany lol
Soon be accurate again then?
🙂
I cant believe some are still hyping up the 'copyright' angle to the OP's issue- its not helpful to simply state "they're breaking the law" - you know, they and schools across the land probably are every damn day but that's not the frigging point of the OP's issue. I work in print production in Higher Education- trust me, I know about copyright and who is likely right and wrong here. CLAIMING AN ABUSE OF COPYRIGHT IS NOT THE ANSWER FOR THE OP. Trust me mate, going in with both feet like that will have you 'black listed' by said teacher and colleages for being a massive prick about it. Grow a pair and mention it to the teacher as others have said. Show some empathy while you're at it to those who are working harder than most of us here to teach our little blighters and you'll get a straight answer, or at least one closer to the truth.
If the school is anything like my wife's place of work, who herself- for the snobs reading here- works 'in a private, very affluent, high preforming la de da' school, her temporary T.A is useless... that's all it is. Shitty disinterested support staff, who are often overworked and undervalued even in the most wealthy of institutions. So guess what? It's almost certainly a human issue, NOT some overarching political cost cutting move by some one diddling you out of your fees.
Our eldest came home with some photocopied homework a couple of weeks ago that was presumably ripped from a book aimed at schools in America. It was all 'color' this, 'recognize' that...
Spelling-based homework too.
Anyway, we ignored it in the end because while our area of North Manchester isn't a warzone it's not affluent. It is 'up and coming' though, so you never know. If the same thing happens again in a year or two I may jolly well kick off about it.
WOW!!!
😆
The affluent bit was tongue in cheek! I don't live on the estate the school is on 😀
At worst they'll put you down on the "Pain In The Arse Parent" list and ensure that the photocopies only go to nasty smelly povvo kids in future.
Tsk, povvo kids? We have none of those scruffy rapscallions in our school!!! 😉
The fact that the school has had a huge cash injection, splashed a load of it on sodding iPads, but then can't be arsed to at least provide a decent copy of a reading book; really is annoying.
am more bothered at the fact that they have had a huge cash injection, splashed a load of it on sodding iPads, but can't be arsed to at least provide a decent copy of a reading book!!
of course, and I understand that.. This is why I highlighted that it's highly likely its just poor work carried out by an assistant in a hurry.. If it was the teacher then, they should know better- and would likely be embarrassed to know your feelings truthfully , but I've lost count the number of times my wife has mentioned carefully set out work and resources that have been butchered by an assistant who cant operate a departmental printer or copier. It happens. It shouldn't but it does.
The allocation of funds in private education is too murky an area to delve into for you and I. It may well be that its been mis-spent to your liking, but this is about some photocopies and a lack of care taken when providing some homework resources. Look of course, I could be wrong maybe there are bigger cost cutting issues but... its unlikely. I got narked at people above distracting your original concern by bringing in copyright issues..and that would only make your life ALOT harder of you chose to take that stance on the matter!
They simply charged us. When it was crap I sent it back and got a refund. When it was good it was money well spent.
Best investment you can make.
@nickhit3 Thank you for a sensible answer!! I wouldn't dream of going in guns blazing, as that achieves nothing.
All I want to know is why my son is being sent home 3/4 of a book. We are expected to complete: homework, spellings, reading and other bits and pieces at home for the school's "stats" (we encourage our children to read, write, draw, investigate etc anyway). So the least they can do is provide us with the correct tools to fulfill said "stats".
Wait what? OP is this a private school? I'm confused now, I can't see where you said it was but everyone else seems to think it is?
Wait what? OP is this a private school? I'm confused now, I can't see where you said it was but everyone else seems to think it is?
I think I made that mistake, so apologies for the confusion. The point similar things go on in fee paying establishments however all the time is further to illustrate that it's no guarantee of a more efficient 'service' being delivered- and that these things in my experience often have a simple 'human error' factor to them.
That the OP and his child is having to deal with incomplete, badly handled resources is the problem-and he has every right to be annoyed at that. I hope it is addressed OP, it isn't good enough and should be brought up. My bluster was aimed at the fools above who started blabbing about copyright.
Ah right I see, sorry. 🙂
Carry on!
haha
Rather than complainign at the school for being underfunded, perhaps you should complain to your MP, or the education secretary? And I hope you didn't vote Tory.
And I hope you didn't vote Tory.
I would never do that!!! *shudders*
