My super-cool swimming goggles went pop this morning (the elastic broke). Time for some new ones. It looks like there are a variety of goggles available now which can have presciption lenses fitted.

Anyone got any experience with them, or any recommendations?

K

There are 2 ways to make a prescription goggles, one is a 'sticker' that goes on he inside of the lens the other is a true glazed lens, there are various styles of frame available for either, IMHO the second option above is the better for my son (who has quite a strong prescription) I made some with transition lenses so they were of more benefit abroad/outside too.

My better half uses some Gator Prescription googles - from RX-Sports. They're not her true prescription, you pick the nearest to your prescription for each eye (think it's in steps of 0.5, and you can have different for each eye). Comes out at about £40, which is apparently much cheaper than getting custom prescription ones.

I bought some cheapo ones from Amazon. They are not super awesome, but stop me bumping into things and walking into the ladies changing room.

I've had a few pairs over the years, our local opticians sell them at about £30. My current pair are "Leader" branded, but the last pair I can't remember the name of but were identical to the cheapo ones in Jamie's link. Speedo do some now if you want them to look just like everyone elses goggles.

I'm -5.5 prescription and get on just fine by choosing -5 lenses. I'll probably get the Speedos next time round, but plenty of life in the current pair. Well worth it to enjoy the swimming.

Thanks all. Those goggles that just have the variable power/dioptres without any sort of specific spherical tayloring (hope that makes sense?) - does anyone know what difference the person wearing the goggles would notice between their normal glasses and the goggles without the Spherical factor built in?

You'll manage without the spherical component of the prescription. I've used mine for hours and hours round water parks on holiday, going up and down stairs and stuff. Just not quite as good as normal specs, but plenty good enough.

kevin1911 depends on your prescription tbh as to whether you can do without the cyl, depending how 'strong' your cyl is you might need to adjust the sphere power to accomodate to nearest diaopter

OK, I'm well and truly out of my depth here (get it?) - what constitutes a 'strong' cyl? The higher the number?

I am high prescription, -6.5 and astigmatism. I had the insert ones and they were ok, just. Then tried contacts and decent speedo swimsockets - much better solution. I cant wear contacts normally so specs all the time, but the contacts are great for swimming.

but the contacts are great for swimming.

I would like to do this, but feel the risks, as someone who has continuous wear lenses, is just not worth it. Probably erring on the side of caution, and it's mostly Daily Mail stories about peoples' eyeballs getting eaten by rampant bacteria after swimming in contacts, but it's yer eyes innit.

Jamie - I only wear them when swimming, so different risk level I guess. I have slightly different prescriptions in each eye, but for ease my contacts are the same preseription for each, which is fine for what I use them for. I pop them in in the car park and pop them out when getting changed afterwards - daily disposables so it adds a quid onto price of a swim, but for me its the perfect solution. With decent goggles, which I put on before going in water and dont take off at all till I'm done and out of pool, there is no moisture anywehere near my eyeballs 🙂
