We will be in touch
Should I write
"Depending of the nature of the ligand and..."
or
"Depending on the nature of the ligand and ..."
Cheers

I don't think I've ever seen "depending of" used 🙂
Definitely "on". 🙂

Thanks everyone
Mucho love

What natures may a ligand have, out of interest?
hydrophobic, hydrophilic, can be aromatic, can be an H-donor, and H-acceptor 😉
I'd maybe plump for 'Dependent on'.
Edit: Sorry, def 'ent' not 'ant' - duh!
My calculations indicated that the electron donation of the ligand to the Rh atom, rather than the chelating ability or the metal?ligand orbital mixing, was responsible for tuning carbene charge via back-donation, which can influence the reactivity and selectivity of the dirhodium complexes in catalytic carbene transfer reactions.
Dunno if you had the same result, Juan.
I don't deal with metallo-enzyme 😉
😥
ADH - you sure about that. A dependAnt is someone/thing that (which?) depends on someone/thing else. For example, a child is a dependant of its parents (but it may also be dependEnt on them for providing food and shelter).
Oh, and I would use "Depending on" in juan's example.
OMITN both are valid as a noun, '-ant' used to be more prevalent UK english, but the OED appears now to fully list under 'dependent' and point 'dependant' to the listing for 'dependent', which usually means they've decided that is now more prevalent.
I agree everyone would know what he is on about.
I must be really bored if I'm escaping work via the forum, only to talk about work ...
upon
So is it dependant or dependent?
I'd like to keep the thesis free of Americanisms.
You can use either juan, but dependent seems more in vogue. Neither is an americanism.
Thank you very much indeed 😀
defo -ent.
You need a copy of 'My Grammar and I': Caroline Taggart et al.Michael o mara books.
Is it not 'dependent upon'?
That's my thoughts too, woffle.
Nice, I'm almost ready to submit my thesis. How long have you got left ?
I rather like one of the reviewers comments for my latest paper.
Please change indifferent to incongruent -ok and I'll now use this throughout !
spoon I had my viva 3 month ago 😉
Just doing the corrections... And as usual I left it to the last minute 😉
Nice, congrats - how was it ?
Hard
They made me cry on the inside.
But know I think it was a good thing
Ok... not what I want to hear -but expecting that.
I have considered a crying approach if it all goes wrong!
Crying during vivas = bad
Crying after vivas = normal
Good luck, Mr Spoon! I hope you've got something lined up for when it's over (job and/or protracted drinking session) 🙂
yeah I know !
I'm starting a postdoc in Geneva in neuroscience. Failing the viva is not an option !
A whole heap of extra pressure
what barney said;
Interestingly first thing I did after my viva was going to the climbing wall with my internal examinator.
He told me he could see I was crying in the inside, a bit like when I drop him from almost the whole wall... Just to be on the fair side 😉
A brewery tour is being lined up - Either way should be enough beer to sort out either outcome 🙂
I might say:
"X is dependent on Y" rather than "Depending upon Y, X"
I might say:
"X is dependent on Y"
rather than:
"Depending upon Y, X"
To me it seems more direct to state the action X first and then qualify it with dependence Y. And doesn't need the comma.
hydrophobic, hydrophilic, can be aromatic, can be an H-donor, and H-acceptor
Sounds bloody racist, to me...
I'm aromatic! 😀
