This cracked me up... Poynton renamed by the locals as:-
People's Republic of Poynton
😈
Got to say as a cyclist or for that matter a driver or pedestrian I don't get the whole shared space thing they've got going on there...
What's not to get... Everyone has equal rights of way and equal priority.
People's republic of Poynton.... Where'd you get that from.. Is it anything like the people's republic of todmorden?
Wannabe 'upper middle class' syndrome.
Anywhere they learn lacrosse in PE lessons is stuck up! 😉
Are we talking about Poynton in Cheshire? I've a cousin that lives there.
I don't think anyone gets the shared space, drivers still think they have priority from what I've seen.
People's republic of chorlton is worse. If you play a brass instrument, ride a bike & have a beard your allowed in.
Poynton is just full of bmw's & Barbour jackets
I don't think anyone gets the shared space, drivers still think they have priority from what I've seen.
That's true the road is still defined as separate from the pavement. Now pedestrians risk life and limb hoping vehicles will stop when they utilise their equal rights.
Is Chorlton Village property still as over priced as it was in the 90's(last time I was there)?
Tom B Tis the very one...
"shared space" works very well on the continent. not sue it works in poynton, we were driving through at 20mph when a bloke just wandered straight out without looking. shared space is ok but you still need to share responsibility for yourself if no-one else
Having grown up there I'm amazed Poynton ever makes it onto anyone's radar. I was very cynical at first about the shared space thing especially the double header roundabout but actually I quite like it. It mostly works quite well. Not perfect but better than before.
Never tried the shared space at rush hour.
Also never heard it called 'peoples republic off Poynton'.
Marple would probably benefit this kind of shared road use.
Only been through Poynton once since the shared space came in - took me a moment to figure it out, then crept carefully through whilst avoiding pedestrians who felt it meant that they could just wander wherever the hell they like, and middle aged women in 4x4s who thought it meant they could just drive wherever/however they liked.
It's fine in theory, would take a whole load of culture change to work properly in the UK
They are not ideal for high-density traffic, and completely beyond the comprehension of many. Mind you, It'll be fine once the A6 bypass goes in.
