I want to install a pond pump for a fountain, i've got mains elec in the shed (about 5 m away). Now i'm wondering if its ok to bury some conduit + cable under the paving stones and connect it to one of the sockets in the shed with an RCD. Now i know i really should get this done by an electrician, or do it myself and have it signed off, but does everyone actually do this? Or would most people just do it the DIY way and ignore the regs?

If i was selling the house i'd just remove the pump and pull the cable through so wouldnt be a problem for future owners.

Or alternativley anyone know how effective the solar pumps are? pond is a bit shaded so think i'd need a largish panel to get a decent fountain spray and they are more expensive (but cheaper than getting an electrician to do the cable work and sign it off).

Ah just found out you can get low voltage pumps (12 / 24v) so that may be the answer!

I've just bought another one to install as my old pumps just died, originally I laid the cable through some rigid piping under the lawn, wired a plug on the end and plugged that into a RCD... been fine for 10yrs plus... If/when I move home I'll pin a plan of where the cable runs on the garage door
