MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I'm planning on visiting some relatives in CA later this year. While there we're going to have a few nights away in Point Reyes.
Anyone have any experience of the area? Where to ride, visit etc?
I'll be with the family so any riding I do will have to involve bike hire and only getting out for a few hours here and there.
Cheers,
Ian
Well if you are looking for a brilliant bike shop go visit Chris and the mice at Roaring Mouse Cycles.
Cycled through there a couple of months ago and was busy with lots of cyclists around, we camped at Sam P Taylor, I remember it being a hot bed of cycling with Fairfax and San Anselmo going down to Frisco, cycle lanes and loads of bike shops. Weather can be a bit dicey very changeable. North of there was a great little town called Valley Ford where the general store served some great sandwiches.

Go and stay at the Bear Valley Inn in Olema. http://www.bearvinn.com/
The owners are mega cycling buffs. Point Reyes Station has one of the best bike shops in the world. Black Mountain Cycles. Oh, you need to visit te Bovine Bakery in PRS too.

Ride Bolinas Ridge - ride out on the road from Fairfax to Bolinas up past the Bontempi Dam. Once you hit the top, turn right and follow Bolinas Ridge all the way to Olema. You can ride back up through the SPT Park or stick your bike on the Stagecoach Bus.
Take a ride over to Limantour Beach.
That corner of Marin is one of my favourite places in the world.
Charlie Kelly will be along shortly with a much better offer.
+1 The Mice & Chris - top guys, great shop. Point Reyes is probably more suited to getting some road miles in - lots of nice tarmac & f-all traffic.
For riding try Boy Scouts at Tamarancho, Skeggs (El Corte De Madera) & Annadell. The Mice ride Skeggs every Wednesday during the season but be warned its mental fast but they will wait..& at Skeggs its very easy to ride for 2 hrs, do 12 miles & do over 3000ft of climbing..
Also check out Getalt Haus Fairfax. The owner is a guy named Murph. A top guy, a bike nut & puts on loads of bike stuff in Norcal.
Enjoy!
Belatedly rechecking this thread...
Thanks for the tips 🙂
McMoonter has it, Ken and Amanda are great hosts and know the trails like the backs of their hands.
Check out Bolinas too, awesome wee place.
Unfortunately we've already booked accommodation elsewhere - we needed/wanted a separate room for our 4yo, and their cottage bit was a bit too pricey for us.
We're staying in Pt Reyes Station and I'll definitely investigate the above suggestions 🙂
verses - there are some great walking hiking trails around PRS too.
Mike at the bike shop will tell you all you need to know.

Mike and Amanda present Bakersfield and Beyond on KWMR. Worth listening too to get you in the mood for West Marin

Marin County, Cali
Thanks for the H/T, McMoonter.
It's hard to pick a better base of operations than Point Reyes Station. Good mountain biking to be had in many directions from there, which is about 20 miles from where I live.
Well I've had a week in the Bay area and will be heading over to Pt Reyes on Monday. Planning tohire a bike on Weds and head out along the Bolinas Ridge trail, can't wait 🙂
Thanks for all the input.
Ride Bolinas Ridge
Was this named after that Marin bike?
All of the trails there were named after mountainbikes, it's where the sport was born.
Al means all of the mountainbikes were named after the trails.
