Only criticism from me would be the background halo around the subject on the last is a bit distracting.

To be honest, whilst that paritcular image is quite striking, I'm not overly keen on it. I was experimenting and had a particular outcome in mind but wasn't able to achieve it in the time available (that and the battery ran out on my second light).

The 'halo' effect is something that the Greek portrait photographer Platon uses a lot. I thought it would be interesting to try but like you I'm not sure it's all that successful.

My personal favourite is the b&w one of her daughter. I'm really very happy indeed with that!

I think the shots look 'posed'. The daughter less so. Possibly why it works better.
Btw, all these shots are beyond anything I can do in the realm of portraiture. Respect for interfacing with people.

I think the shots look 'posed'.

All my work is done posed; I very rarely shoot candids these days. These were taken from a formal session though, which is different to how I normally work (which is in the moment, in the street).

I think you're identifying that you're not keen on portrait photography, which is fine and I don't take it as a criticism. I also think it's important to not anchor your opinion to whether you have the ability to execute things yourself. Your opinion can be just as valid (and I welcome it).

Possibly what you're articulating is the ability to capture a person's true self without it looking too contrived? That is much more difficult to do. The colour photograph though has had people who know the subject unanimously declaring that that is absolutely her but you would only know that if you knew her. It also doesn't mean that the pose she is holding isn't, as you say, entirely posed. I had her very deliberately hold this position. It is possible to achieve the sense of the person without directing them, but that is the part that is much harder to achieve and where I still have a lot of work to develop as a skill.

To be honest, I've been thinking a lot lately about the value and athenticity of photographic portraiture in general. I have some doubts even though I am deeply wedded to the idea!

Nowhere near as good as all the other pictures on this thread but I like this one as it was taken on my phone as a grab shot while riding my bike on Rhossili beach. Very rarely do I get a picture that looks almost exactly like I saw it at the time, usually the digital filters make it look a bit brighter or fake but this one came out perfect.

I can't quite make my mind up about this one: On the one hand, I like the sense of isolation, represented by the yacht. On the other hand, I wish I had zoomed in, to make it more prominent. I quite like the textures, though.

No filters, and on a phone camera, so not the best. Was almost an inversion, quite hard to capture the quality of light.

Thank you Andy. No they weren't taken with flash but I can see why you might think they are. They were taken about 30 minutes after sunrise so the sun is really low in the sky and with the tide out, the wet sand was reflecting a lot of light as well.

But it does have that borderline superimposed look of daylight strobe.

As ever your own work inspires. I meant to mention that the one of the rayburn cooker you posted is lovely; the expired film stock and that lighting works really well.

It's very good; nice composition, the light is fabulous.

Trinity College Library Dublin, Fuji X-T2 50mm F2 at F2 1/170sec ISO12800, not gone through the rest of my card properly yet, but this one surprised me as the Fuji seems brilliant with anything green, but to get the detail in this one at a level I couldn't even see with my eyes, it was pretty dim in there.

Ps.. it's got locking buttons on the ISO and shutter dials, but they just seem to unlock themselves, never had that problem with Nikon, but still its a lovely camera

Interesting you say that because reproducing 'green' is what the Bayer Array is specifically designed to do well. It's what a lot of digital sensors do badly (compared to film) and is the colour the human eye is most sensitive to (which is why we notice when green is poorly rendered).

Oh with one caveat, Lightroom/Adobe camera RAW totally murders Fuji RAW files when it comes to green, as soon as you start any sharpening, only a touch and I mean a touch and you get weird wormy type artifacts in the greens. I pre-process using Irident X-Transformer and apply the camera/lens profile in that before Lightoom, then all I do in Lightroom then usually is a straighten to cope with my cack handiness.

Interesting, I wonder if that is because there's more green data than red or blue? Also you should try Capture One; send me a few sample RAW files where you have this issue and I will try them in Capture One and see if that does the same thing.

Deal.. I'm in Dublin this week wandering about with my camera so when I get back at the weekend I've some classic examples on my main PC that show this issue, would be interested to see what Capture One does with them. Ps Fuji un-compressed RAW averages about 50MB on the X-T2

Good photo. Lit well. Good composition. What's not to like?
As a magazine designer I'd have cropped in slightly tighter and lost white space from the left, or run a title and text down that area.
The way you are leaning to the right distances yourself from that space on the left, but to my eye there isn't enough white or too much. As a landscape crop it would work better for me.

Hmmm, I like your suggestion actually. I will give that a go over the weekend. This is taken in my living room, which isn't terribly large but has an arch in the wall through to the dinning room. I've hung a piece of material across that archway and then back lit it, which is why it's gone to pure white. But all this makes it a little tricky to set up landscape. I'll try it with the 35mm instead.

Thanks buddy, I rarely get feedack so this really helps.

You've got a pure white background. Why worry about a reshoot? This is what Potatoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are meant for...

Ah that's a good point actually. Frustratingly I don't have Photoshop (or lightroom for that matter). I use capture one which only has RAW editing functions.

Erm, at the risk of setting myself up for a fall, cpu;d you just photoshop it for me? 😀

So has polarisandy got a stalker or is there a sort of photo trail of neglected properties somewhere up north?

Hah, nice one Sofaking, good to see the same spot in a different light, look forward to more.
That particular village had untold riches.
It was the South end of the village to the big house with the wardrobe and cloths.
Same as the bathroom shots.

Enjoyed the mountain pass back to Tarbert.
Very different landscape from the rest of the Hebrides.

I had the opportunity to practise making formal 'studio' style portraits with a fascinating and very fine young man called Callun. He's a parkour practiioner and a very good one. He's only 18 but he runs a local community project teaching and coaching kid in parkour. What he's acheived is to be admired.

Anyway, he's been looking to do some TV work and I offered to help him create a portfolio of headshots (for free). He needs the shots, I need the practise so it was a win/win.

I've not really done anything like this before. In truth I was simply setting up in my living room with a white sheet pinned across an alcove as a backdrop, so it's all still quite limited but it was an interesting exercise and I like some of the results:

lovely work Greg and well lit/observed. i think 1 and 3 are the hero shots, i would drop 2 and 4 myself.

edit: actually the more i look at no 1 the more i like it, the angle of cheekbone to elbow, the way the fingers point to an imaginary place where the eyes gaze, it ticks all my visual language classical art rule boxes

Some fantastic stuff in here, would live even half the vision to spot some of these shots.

I’ll join in with a relatively poor phone shot that’s a tad over processed but I wanted a dark look...

We were promised a lot of sunshine that didn't arrive (boo!) so I just chilled and played with a flash. This was about 2:30. Wish I'd taken a second flash.

OK, it's wasn't taken this month, but I've just been going through my old PC that I haven't switched on for years. I found this one, taken of two good friends of mine during a road trip in Canada:

[img]DSC_0165 by Mike Kennedy, on Flickr[/img]

I don't really "do" people, so this is a rarity, for me.
