Not a photo but i love this video i made of a mate chasing his 8 year old son down a bit of singletrack.

Really special seeing a father & son doing something they both love

@boltonjon

Great video. Better than most current MTB vids. Captures something of us mere mortals.

Taken on the point and shoot i think took ages to get his eye in focus

ook ages to get his eye in focus

You'll be pleased to know then that there is a dedicated 'Eye AF' function on the Sony cameras (and I pressume on other makes also). Activating it causes the camera to recognise an eye in the shot and then automatically focus on that.

On the a6300 there is and it works incredibly well. It doesn't work on the dog though, it's doggist!
Some of the focus functions are very clever I haven't really got my head round them yet

It will recognise a dog's eye as an eye but it has to be able to see it. With the image above the eye is dark and the head is dark so the camaer wouldn't be able to distinguish the eye from the background.

😀 How are you getting on with it? I've had mine a couple of years now and it's been terrific (although still need a 'proper' heavy duty one).

Wow Kit - that's the kind of shot that makes a year's worth of shooting worthwhile. Nice job!

Thanks Greg! Truth be told, it's a bit of a cheat 😉 Burst mode on the A7II but I didn't get the whole castle in shot (hand held), so I stitched it with a shot I'd taken earlier. You don't see it though, because PS is frikkin' clever 😉

I really like the BeFree because it packs small. I have a few others including a 60's studio thing bought second hand that was designed to hold big old 10x8 cameras. That weights about 3 stone and never leaves the building. Or get used much to be honest.

Anyway a couple more from yesterday.

As above...

Different reasons

Stood in awe at these guys 75miles into the Lakeland 100 fell race and were moving only slightly slower than I was in the 50miler. Another level of mental toughness to me.

For once, I'm in front of the camera instead of behind it on this one (taken by my wife). Very chuffed with this, going on the wall!

First few with a borrowed Hasselblad and medium format film (albeit expired and there appear to have been a few light leaks from the film back).

Looks like you're enjoying the mf experience Greg, lovely images. What film is it?

Expired Portra 400VC. It expired around 2009 and hasn't been kept in a freezer!

The experience has been one of promise and frustration. The light leaks, missed focus and in some cases poor performance of the expired film are frustrating but there is still a depth and tonality to MF film that is incredibly rewarding.

It sounds a bit weak but MF film is something that has more 'feeling' to it than smaller film formats or digital to me. Nothing wrong with any, and all have their place, but I enjoy MF film despite it being cumbersome and frustrating when old cameras just don't work or jam, or development doesn't work properly. Whether the rewards for me come from putting more thought in when clicking the shutter, the depth and tonality of the format/medium, or just something sentimental is anybody's guess - but I can never seem to sell my gear despite how little it gets used.

I should get round to posting something on here after seeing some of the really great work but everything would be from months ago now...

Cheers for the link Fasthagis, been away for a bit so just got to see it.
I love the subject matter and would also have loved to have found the spots he did.
Like Kit says, best/better it's subjective.

I like the aspect of telling a story.
I like melancholy, decay and sentimentality.
I prefer the film look to the digital,
The camera has a fixed 70mm lens, 12 shots in it and for the most i take just one shot of each subject.

So that's how i choose the photos i take and the medium and the gear dictates how i take them.
Both contribute to what they look like.

You either like it or you don't, you prefer it or you don't.

p.s. good to see the Hass GT. Light seals tend to go on the A12 backs though.
Above shot was on film that expired 2006. Bought cheap of "the bay", no idea how it was stored.
I allow 1 stop for every 10 years OOD, so above Fuji RDP was shot at 50 rather than 100.
Look forward to seeing more

I am enjoying shooting with film again and the Hasselblad continues to delight, surprise and disappoint all in equal measure. When it’s good it’s sublime, but get it wrong and there is no salvaging anything and each frame costs about £2!

Aye GT £2 per shot, but it teaches you to get it right..having said that you need a film back that doesn't leak light..
Your film pics look great anyway..

I take it that you are using a light meter rather than sunny16?

Strangely another thing like about film is that you can miss the shot, it seems to make it a little bit more special. I'm not sure the idea of the 'decisive moment' still holds true with digital and 8 frames per second.

Did you scan your own negatives?
