im lucky in that i live in a place where a lot of 'action sports' happen.
i am asking people who are actively photographers and selling photos of the action sports type field.
i am currently building a website for the possibilities into going into this part time as i do have a full time job too.
is there alot of call for this, as in people buying prints from you? and how much is a print?
whats to just stop them copying the print from your site with a watermark if they didnt care?
to prohibit a right click function?
many thanks
nick
Can't answer most of your points but
to prohibit a right click function?
Really don't bother! Ridiculously easy to get around (e.g. turn off JavaScript in the browser; do Tools->Page Info in Firefox; screen capture; or just look for the image source in the HTML). All it does is annoy people.
Better to watermark your image and include your website address on it so folk with a watermarked image know where to get the original.
thanks for your advice...
Also make sure your watermark can't be easily cropped off or cloned over, and consider adding your information to the EXIF metadata as well.
Accept that people will take them and use them without permission. I have photos being used by large sites without permission. I now use a really ugly watermark which covers at least 30% of the photo and hasn't really damaged sales, if anything sales have improved.
Pricing is what the market will hold, what's the competition charging? Talking of competition, is there any? And if so what are you going to do that is different and better than them?
How are you going to market and actually get them to the customer?
Some things to think about...
People will only buy if it's their first or memorable event, I take multy sport events regularly and the top 20% of the field rarely if ever buy because they have plenty from earlier events. That leave the remaining 80% who will over the following 2 weekds following the event look at the pictures and some and I mean some buy.
Only shoot big, memorable events, take pictures where the athletes/competitors look good not gasping, drippling, walking etc.
It's good fun and I love it, so enjoy!
email me if you want more.
there is NO COMPETITION!!!
there is for huge events but for the odd days where i will go to there is no-one
mainly for bike parks to be honest and i would like to chat the manager up and see if i could put some on their site or a link/banner type thing and sort out a way of payment percentage on pictures purchased.
would be instantly uploaded as i took them with a remote laptop say after 30 shots taken.
don simon - do you have a website i can take a look at or a example of your watermark...was thinking to go across the middle of the shot to be honest from one side to the other.
greenboy - thanks for your input. i think i would be selling them as a novelty rather than to a competition type cliental.
so for arguements sake, your in morzine and took a few snaps of your decent whilst walking up past you, few shots inc your air or terrain type thing. how much would you be willing to part with?
nothing would be set up, so i would shoot as i walked up type thing and hand out cards in the morning at the lift and also place cards at the ticket station.
5? 10? pound?
Have a look here.
And if you go towards the bottom of this page you can see a photo of mine used without permission and not exactly butchered but... See for yourself. If you go through this guys page you'll see he isn't too fussy about the watermarks either, but he hasn't used one of mine since I started putting the fugly one on.
Good luck.
BANG ON!!!!!! THATS EXCATLY what im after!!!!
watermark also bang on.....
10quid a pic tho??
you find it a fair price?
how much more would you be tempted to take one at 5 pound?
would you rather a hard copy in a nice 2 fold design with a map layout of trails which would be more say 10 pounds.....
or a downloaded email sent type picture? for 5?
would you pay the extra??
i like the fugly idea hehe, you use photoshop for that?
if i can ask a real personal question, your more than welcome to email me if you prefer.
how many per event or so would you be selling......
im just trying to see if its worth it tbh.
but its a gold mine if i or someone pulled this off!!
I knock 'em out for €10,00 per photo digital or A4 size. Charge what you think your work is worth and the market will take. I also have a 'Facebook friends' only offer for a reduced resolution file at €5,00 and an even more reducered file plus more descreet watermark for €3,00.
A bit like this one.
I have regular customers so a bit of a contrast from what greenboy said and have built this up over a couple of years.
It's hard graft but very, very worth it. I get a lot of satisfaction on many different levels.
It's actually quite difficult to give figures per event as folks buy in different ways.
I have a display of printed which I use to show off the standard and quality. All the others are either sold through my web or by email directly from me. As I said the majority of my pics are sold to repeat customers and that's my objective, to build a good solid base of regular customers.
I'll pop you a quick mail too.
thanks alot for the info.....
nick
as you say a reduced resolution? as in a smaller size or so?
do you do all this with photoshop?
regards
ygm.
I have Photoshop but tend not to use it. For resizing I use Faststone resizer, it's FREEEEEEE!
reduced resolucion will give you a smaller size.
Nick, i do something along the same sort of lines.
I shoot football, Rugby and Gymnastics (along with model aircraft), the main people who wants photo's are parents with children younger than teenagers. This makes up the majority of my sales.
As above use Faststone resizer for water marking & resizing.
I don't print my own photo's unless its onsite and needed imediately, i upload them to my website (and add passwords to each gallery).
I use Costco online for ordering cheap decent quality prints and then collect the photos from the store.
If i can be of any help feel free to ask.
While I remember if you need a hosting site you could do worse than http://www.zenfolio.com/ and with this referral code 9DQ-FX3-DQC you'll get 10% discount too. 😉
