My old android phone is on its last legs, bless it, so I panic'd and bought a simila phone from a colleague at work, who says its easy to unlock.

There is a geezer 15 miles away in the shopping centre who will do it, but there seems to be any amount of people that will let you pay by paypal for an unlock code.

I have the IMEI number, want to go from O2 to Orange on an xperia arc. I thought Orange may help (I've been with them 10 years - I'm very happy). They said call O2, but I'm hesitant. I found a number and they are closed anyway. The phone is over a year old and out of contract, but not sure if O2 will sort me out. Why should they?

So, any recommendaitons for a website I can go to? for a code?

Thanks for looking.

Have you tried puting an orange SIM in it and seeing if it works?

Why wouldn't O2 sort you? You'll be paying of course.

Most O2 handsets are already unlocked, try your orange sim in it. Alternatively, the original owner can get it unlocked really easily. There ought to be a form on the website and it takes less than 24 hours.

get the original owner to do the form, or pay money and go to one of those places that do it for you, and charge you money

O2 can't help as phone still in contract. It would have been 15 quid.

So they can help, you just don't want to pay for it. Good luck with that.

The phone is over a year old and out of contract,

O2 can't help as phone still in contract.

Cougar- keep up. :-). My work colleague got it wrong. He sold it telling me it was out of contract, when it wasn't. Thanks for your suggestion, you were you were right. I'll have to get my money back now, otherwise i'm back to my original question. i.e. Any recommendations for a phone unlocker on line.

Seems you are wanting this unlocking for free. Only way round it would be to get the seller to contact O2 to unlock or the other choice you have is pay £15 to O2, pay the phone guy in your local town or pay someone on eBay.

I bought unlock code off eBay for my sons HTC for about £5 after tesco wanted £20. Code arrived within 10 min and phone was unlocked. Best of luck with trying a free service as you could end up being locked out of phone.

Which handset is it?

You should be able to do it yourself by changing to a world generic firmware. If you go to xda forum's there should a guide on how to do it. It's virtually impossible to permanently brick an android handset.
I did this with my arc and its reasonably straightforward as long as you do exactly what it says.

You've bought a phone and would rather send it back than pay a few quid to get it unlocked legitimately?

Weird.

I have rooted and installed a custom rom on a HTC hero,IT DOES NOT unlock the sim network.

I got mine unlocked off a guy on ebay for a couple of quid.
