The Brewery Tap is good, close to the station and is the Oakham Ales Brewery. Food is mainly Thai, but they have a reasonable English selection. This place http://clarkespeterborough.co.uk/ gets great reviews for food but not for ambiance - not been myself but friends who have say it is good. There is a new Carluccios on Cathedral Square or the Beehive near Asda http://www.beehivepub.co.uk/ is run by a Michelin starred chef if you want something posh.
Other than that the Cathedral Square area has all the mainstream chain restaurants.
Yeah, Beehive or Clarkes in the centre or a myriad curry houses. The Beehive is more of a pub and the grub is decent without it being stuffy.
