Okay so I emailed my boss today as he is in the office tomorrow.

Essentially I am underpaid, such was my haste to get a job after the recession hit me in my last place. Last place paid £24k plus no travel expenses as 5 mins from home. Current place £15k plus travel expenses of around £1200.

The second least paid person is on £18k which is the minimum I would take, now I am prepared to hand in my verbal notice if offered less but knowing my boss he won't want to lose face (he's very proud of his achievements and rightly so). So my question what to go in at £80 a day £85 a day?

I'm off to eat dinner so will reply later.

hmmmm I think this could be tricky.

What's to stop your boss putting forward the case that you accepted the job at 15k?
And how do you know everyone elses wage?

What is the job? Could he simply tell you to beat it knowing that he'll find someone else at 15k?

I'm not putting you down at all, but I think that this type of thing can be difficult to negotiate once you're in.

Oh, and 15k in tax - one day I'll make that much....... one day....

What do you do? Any jobs going? Actually my last boss probably paying similar, quite easy just inherit a company and do sweet FA! Not that I'm saying BB is in this situation.

What are these 'payrises' of which you speak?

Sorry pal, but as can be seen I earn very little so I won't be ashamed of talking about it online. Although I'm aware many people won't be seeing a rise.

What's to stop your boss putting forward the case that you accepted the job at 15k?

Yes I did jump into the job but all these media outlets made me feel the world was caving in, I wanted a job.

And how do you know everyone elses wage?

Just through listening and I asked the chippie what he earns.

What is the job? Could he simply tell you to beat it knowing that he'll find someone else at 15k?

I design small buildings (not an architect) I'm not sure there are certainly people who can do what I do but, I'd be surprised if A) there were that many in the area. B) If he could get them to take £15k. I imagine we would both loose, me having no job and the company producing second rate quotes thus loosing money to the competition.

to the OP, good luck, I'm sure you're boss will know what you're worth, and I expect he's been waiting for you to ask.

It is ultimately where I'd like to go, but I don't have great business/networking skills and I'm fairly new to the full time working world 3 years experience from uni. So feel it is best to stay an employee for the time being. Plus start up costs are £££££.

God there's some big headed tosspots about tonight...!

I think the majority are joking, besides you get the joy of knocking off their Audi wing mirrors on the commute

All you can do is ask, if you're valued and the company can afford it you're in with a chance. You do need to be prepared to call their bluff though, if you honestly won't go somewhere else it'll probably come through during the negotiations.

It all comes down to how reasonable your manager is, it's amazing how many managers utterly rely on their staf but never see it.

There is a very strong possibility that I will be made redundant before I get to see any future pay rise. 🙁

Show him what you have brought to the job and how you have added value.
Dont back him into a corner and dont go to war and give him every opportunity to say yes rather than winding him up and giving him a reason to say no. You may be surprised and get what you ask for.
Only threaten to resign if you mean it!

Bluff: Tell him you've got another job offer you are considering but like working for him.

DO NOT do that unless you are prepared to walk with 5 mins notice.
if you said that to me i'd tell you to **** off to your new job.

i'd take the friendly approach, tell him you're very pleased to have had the opportunities he's given you, and now think that having proven yourself to him, you're in a position to ask for more money as you both know where you're at, and you're worth more than you're being paid. keep a smile on your face, just be calm and persistent. if it doesn't go well ( and if he asks you what you think your worth, aim a bit higher to give him room to come down, so he feels like he's cut a deal ), then start looking for something else.
good luck.

We all know there is no such thing as a pay rise. I will be paying less income tax this year unless ...the condems plan a big rise in the basic tax rate. BB et al enjoy your child benefit cut 8)

Supply and Demand mate. Is your a particularly skilled job that only so many people can do, or could he fill it in seconds at the same level of remuneration if you did leave ?

I cant even remember what a pay rise is. Still trying to adjust to a pay reduction 14 months ago.

Its important to prepare for such negotiations, make sure you have a good excuse ready when your workmates ask you why you have brought in a roll of gaffa tape and a set of bombers.

I did a 2 year HND in cabinet making followed by the final 2 years of a contemporary furniture and product design degree. I'm based 15 miles from Cambridge.

I'm 26 and yes I am living at home which I would like to move out of, but I don't want to spend half my earnings on rent plus my dad has dementia so it would mean leaving my mum alone, or at least until my sister finishes uni.

Well are there are certainly people wo will have my skill set, but whether they are in the area and prepared to work for that wage I'm unsure. Plus add to that time getting up to speed.

If you're happy in your job, and you can afford to live on the wages you earn and have a decent quality of life then I'd say stick where you are. It can't hurt to ask but don't do the 'I'll leave if you don't up my wages' number.

the more you earn, the more you spend. Its a difficult bandwagon to get off

+1 on the don't threaten to leave.

State your case reasonably and calmly, lay out the reasons why you initially agreed to take the lower wage and why you now feel you deserve more.

If you like working there then a confrontation won't do you any good, even if you managed to bully/threaten them into a pay rise they will see you in a different light and it would most likely become a very different place to work.

If you are serious about starting up then I'd look into it. There will be a local business centre type place who can give free impartial advice.

What do you think you would need to start up on your own - equipment wise. Could you keep working and make your own products in your own time?

What do you design/make?

"so BoardingBob earns about 70k a year. Big Fu**king Deal! Hardly how the other half live is it? what a prick."

I concur, doesn't mean a, any good at job or b, would want anything to do with said person, as obviously an egotistical fool who values money over self worth.

Oh regarding the actual query, every one is dispensable, even highly paid wonderful people like BoardingBob.

and be careful in this climate where you can get 100+ people applying for every job, I'm sure the response might be if your not happy with £15k then leave and I'll get some one who is.

Furniture and product are my real interest area but I have been looking at going more industrial such as cell phones/computers but they would obviously be computer renderings.

What do you think you would need to start up on your own - equipment wise.

Equipment is awkward I can make a fair bit but compared to my old work shops I have very little.

Anyway I just spoke with him and I got £18k so that's that.

If you do want to start up then I can help you with workshop equipment. I have many many machines etc..... If you're genuinely interested then get in touch.

And good luck.

i did I asked for £22k was going to ask for £20k then got my sums wrong and asked for £85 a day. Anyway that is good.

I'll certainly contact you to enquire this evening, as always good to find reliable machinists, powder coaters, welders. I even once used a gravestone maker to shape some marble for me, which was both cost effective and he was really interested in the project.

Still, at least you got a payrise...even if you have sold yourself short by an extra few quid a month.
