The Big Society Network...says the open format of the meetings "wasn't really working".

I know you will all be hugely disappointed - especially Z-11, who has been up all night making brownies and decorating the church hall.

My question is this: how would you improve the format?

I would book a DJ.

I feel very let down by this. I had big hopes for Big Society. But as Dave said when prevaricating during an interview this morning...one thing at a time. ๐Ÿ™‚

Maybe we could start with quite a small society, then if we all get on and no one minds, a medium one could be attempted - just to see. Then all being well we can get the big mofo society we all seek so earnestly. Or maybe we could think about it for a while first.

I think the problem is that these exercises are purely designed to make people feel as if they are being listened to. The policies have already been drawn up, but if people think they have had an input they are more likely to go with whatever is imposed on them.

I am a big fan of David Bohm, who wrote "On Dialogue" - this dialogue is something that is an alien concept to politicians. Sorry to be negative, but this is the political modus operandi that seems to have pervaded UK politics at all all levels and in all parties.

Don't worry, Si, I don't set much store by Cam's holy vision... but I am interested in how he can enhance the format - a free bar, for example. ๐Ÿ˜€

Bohm - that's some profound stuff! Just to check I've interpreted the precis I read accurately - what's your interpretation of it?

I have a very shamanic interpretation of Bohm which you can read about first here then here. But these essays are more about the ultimate ground of being, quantum physics and consciousness.

But in a nutshell on dialogue, he says you have to give equal energy to all points of view, not just battle for your own point of view, in order over a long time to arrive at an understand of the meaning that other people are trying to communicate. When you look at what Einstein said about being unable to solve problems at the same level of consciousness that created them, Bohm has an awful lot to say about creativity, and needing a new order of perception and thinking which can take us to these higher levels.

You know, there is no such thing as big society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first.

more strippers

free booze, but only the really rank cheap stuff, white lightening, super lager, that sort of thing

free smokes, but only if it's raining and you need to go at least 100 yrds away from any building to smoke them whilst being shot at by baboons armed with blowpipes loaded with fast-acting laxative

anne widdicombe and gordon brown oiled up for some naked wrestling in avocado puree action

some poor people who're only there to get the free carbolic soap that they mistakenly believe is some form of food, which should be a bit of a laugh

..and some other stuff that's bit on the surreal side

I thought the BS was a load of bobbins when first mentioned back in the ellection but increasingly I think it could be quite a powerful idea. Personally I do sod all to help other people but others I know do their bit - coaching the kids footie team, raising money for some worthy cause and so on. too many people just don't want to contribute to anything other than their own immediate happiness but thats no way to a better society. Its not a new idea but perhaps people need reminding every now and then. 'Don't ask what your country can do for you etc etc' Its worth a chance I think.

How did those people ever manage to do these things without being told to by Dave?

Big Society champion Wei quits role

Quote :

"The flagship Cameron initiative, which aims to reduce the role of the state and get local volunteers to provide more services"

"Wei, a member of the House of Lords, said earlier this year that he was cutting down the amount of time he devoted to the Big Society agenda because he was running short of money."

So working for f-all is not necessarily such as good idea after all ?

Well apparently not, according to the guy tasked with telling us all that it is.

What a novel idea, it'll never catch on though.

Ah, yes ... I think the point was to get us, the ones who're all in it together, to do stuff for f-all

Absofyckinglutely spot on.

The first positive step of any 'big society' meeting would be to find any politicians present and throw em out.

The second would be have someone strike a giant gong and a troup of midgets to come running in carrying trays of cocaine on their heads

The BS has been BS from the start. Sounded nice, but no one really walked it through to the end. Thankfully it's showing Cameron up to be the shallow toss bag he clearly is.

I actually think Dave sincerely means it. i think he does want to build a society and get some sort of community spirit going via direct [ middle class] action. Local folk empowered to improve their own areas and facilities etc. Absolutely deluded if he thought that he was the person to bring this about whilst crippling the public services and the folk who do this sort of thing. i dont think he did it as a side step to public services but that is how it will always be seen.
it will be interesting to see if his arrogance or pragamatism wins out here. I suspect he will use the Olympics as an example of what we can all achieve together though and plow on
