I'm new to the forum, and have been buying in the classifieds. Another member has asked me to send the money for some mechs as 'paypal gift' - why, and should I? Will I lose protection if I never get them??
They don't have to pay fees but you lose protection ( as much as you get with them ) as you say.
This is normally a safe place to but though.
Yeah I thought there would be some trust in the forum, thanks for the reply 🙂
I bought/sold to quite a few people from here, fingers crossed no problems so far but as you say it is more risky especially with a lot of money involved.
If you cant afford to pay the Paypal fees dont use Paypal, simple. If I sent money via Paypal or recieved money via Paypal I would not mark as 'gift' or ask for it to be marked as 'gift'. No matter what the amount small or large.
Normally on small amounts people are just saving pennies. I know pennies make pounds but come on, this is taking it too far. You are paying to use a service, pay the costs or dont use it!!
I have to agree with ^.
I usually ignore sellers wanting payment by gift as I think it is a bit cheeky.
I've had buyers using the gift option as a negotiation tool - fine by me, but otherwise happy to pay for the Paypal service.
As a seller who received payment by GIFT i can 100% confirm that Paypal WILL give the buyer protection.
The item i sold did not arrive (royal mails fault) and paypal settled the claim in the buyers favour as they said they would 100% of the time.
Therefore with a gift you get protection!
be aware that if you pay as a gift and don't have the funds in your account and they are drawn from your bank account or credit/debit card you will be charged a fee!
I use paypal by gift lots. The advantage for the buyer is that they'll get stuff quicker as the payment is immediate. I'd be happy enough to take bank transfer or cheque but both take longer (though BT much less than it used to of course).
I happily pay by gift too. Paypal protection is pretty crap so I don't see any advantage and just use my usual methods for determining if I trust the seller.
I generate plenty of income for paypal through using it to pay for things from CRC/Wiggle/eBay who do pay fees so I don't see an issue.
NiloC - not quite right. If you pay by direct debit (as I do) then there are no fees. I think it's just credit card that means having to pay a fee.
