Got the exciting task of painting new stair bannisters and spindles soon 🙄 what's the recommended way to paint bare knotty pine - Ronseal Knot Block looks like a good start, any good alternatives?

Knot block will probably work indoors. Our front door gets cooked by the sun in the mornings and it makes the knots ooze even though the door is 10+ years old. Knot stop had no effect.

Last year I drilled out all the knots, filled with 2 part expoxy, sanded over, painted with knot stop and then painted in gloss etc.

Actually worked!

The knots came back a few months after using knot solution on our doors.

We were recommended
"Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer Sealer".

Too early for me to say if it will suffer the same problem, but if you look it up it gets favourable reviews.

Good job on the knots footflaps but if you'd been watching the very excellent Leo on his yacht Tally Ho on Youtube you would know that repairs should be made with wood, which will match the expansion and contraction of the rest of the door as humidity varies through the year. I suspect you'll find that those patches will crack round the edges after a season.

To the OP, yes two layers of knotting shellac will slow the resin down and with luck you won't see the brown stain for quite a few years.

The Zinsser has worked for me where normal knotting fluid had ended up failing.
