I'd like to get a chin-up bar to use at home, but we don't have much space and I'm pretty tall so I'm thinking about mounting something on the side of the house (out of the way by the garage). I'm tempted to just buy a £20ish wall mounted unit, bolt it to the house and keep an eye on it / see how well it survives outside over the winter, does anyone have any advice or suggestions either for or against this?

They seem to be pretty popular in the US, but getting a well constructed one seems to be the best option.

If worst comes to worst, how about making some sort of shelter over the top of it?

i know its not what you asked, but you do seem to have preferred one indoors, so have you considered one of these?

theyre great. they dont rip the paint off the inside of the doorframes or fall off and if youre too tall you could bend your knees? theyre a bit higher than the ones you screw out til theyre lodged in the frame, they hook over the other side of the door frame so all your weight pushes into the wall.

EDIT: oh and they fold flat, you could keep it behind a settee or somethings if short of space.....

You can get ones that mount in doorways, takes up no space at all. That's what I did back when I was rock-climbing regularly.

But how is that foxy next door neighbour going to be able to admire your ripped torso if you're indoors?

Ah, mine's a lot more basic than that. This sort of thing.

Couple of caps you screw into the wall, look a bit like used tealights. Then the bar extends out into the cups.

I've discounted the ones that mount in doorways as we've only got one doorway downstairs and its right in the corner and under the stairs so I don't think it would be a good place (if i can get something that doesn't overhang sideways too far) and don't think I could use one upstairs as we have silly little windows above the doors, plus I'd much rather excersise outside (even when its cold and shitty!)

Edit:

But how is that foxy next door neighbour going to be able to admire your ripped torso if you're indoors?
unfortunately we've no foxy neighbours and they cannot see the side of the house anyway! 😆

Any thoughts on an outside chin-up bar?

Good thread, in that it has helped me discover the powerbar (above) which seems to be the way forward. So thanks for that 😀

Happily, I am in a position to reciprocate. It seems that the nice people who make the Powerbar also have an outside-pullups-solution in their armoury.

It's called the Wall Bar and you can find it at the link below

It looks like this:

Any trees to hang something from? I've got gym rings hanging from a tree branch in the garden, they can be used for chin-ups etc.
